 | [Info] DIR-655 Beta 1.6 Firmware - Awesome! Id just like to say that the DIR-655 (Beta Firmware) 1.6 is awesome! I was actually usually the DSD-150 but it was constantly crashing even after the new firmware upgrade, I rang support and they offered me if I wanted to use their new DIR-655 firmware (which is my router), I gladly accepted and they sent me the firmware its pretty awesome all in one router now!
Its an all in one protection and covers me for all these things :
Parental Control Firewall Identity Protection Reporting (Web Logs) Pop Up Blocker AntiVirus / Anti Spyware
One Great thing is you can block ads to my amazment it seems to have blocked all the ads up to now usually I see ads on here now I cant see them anymore
Ive tested my speed with the 1.6 firmware and 1.5 and cant see any difference, you have an option to make the small client required to be installed on all clients (The router checks this when a new PC is detected on a network). The program is very small and doesnt effect any gaming (My PC is a gaming PC)...
Heres a few screenshots :

Cant wait for the public release! To see what else they have added.... |

1 edit | I too have access to the new beta, but I am very hesitant. Please elaborate on "the program is very small"... Exactly how many processes does it keep loaded, and how much ram do they consume? And do you absolutely have to install the mcafee antivirus it includes, for example? (In other words, does the new firmware offer any benefit without any extra running software?) |

JoeG4 join:2001-12-16 945941 | reply to MrDoughBoy So let me get this straight - 1.6 adds securespot to the DIR-655?
Or does it just improve the compatibility with the DSD-150? |
|
 | reply to Scree I can only see one process heres the info on the running process:
File Name: StartInet.exe Display Name: Bsecure Internet Protection Services Description: StartIne Application Publisher: Bsecure Technologies, Inc. Digitally Signed By: VeriSign Class 3 Code Signing 2004 CA File Type: Application Startup Value: C:\Windows\system32\InetCntrl\StartInet.exe File Path: C:\Windows\system32\InetCntrl\StartInet.exe File Size: 54840 File Version: 1, 0, 0, 1 Date Installed: 28/06/2007 23:15:20 Startup Type: Registry: Local Machine Location: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Classification: In Progress Ships with Operating System: No |
|
 | reply to JoeG4 Yes it Adds Securespot to the DIR-655 if you enable it in the config menu. |

JoeG4 join:2001-12-16 945941 | reply to MrDoughBoy LOL I wish I could say that is a relief, but it only puts me more on the edge. You mean, enables the use of a DSD-150, or did D-Link actually put the features of it into our router?
If so.. wow. I'm impressed. |
|
 | Yep its like a DSD-150 inside the router, you can of course choose not to enable it if you don't want to, you have to pay a subscription but if you are testing the beta you get it free for 12 months... Without needing to enter a credit card number. |

JoeG4 join:2001-12-16 945941 1 edit | reply to MrDoughBoy SWEET! Where do I sign up dude?
Just checked, btw it seems subscriptions are $80 a year and $20 per machine if you happen to want to install the software. No need for that, but I wonder if $80 might end up a tad on the extreme side.
OTOH, free sub for a year I'm open to giving that a shot |

kreggo join:2003-03-10 Pearland, TX | reply to MrDoughBoy Thanks for the info. I just had to remove the Yahoo kid protection software package from my 9 year old's PC cuz it was causing all kinds of problems. Looks like the next firmware release is gonna take care of me |
|
 | reply to MrDoughBoy Does anyone know if this will be released in Europe?
We're still stuck with 1.03, and I'd really love to upgrade to 1.05, but don't want to risk it or void my warranty.
Cheers,

 | reply to MrDoughBoy Hi,
I had signed up for the Beta test, but ended up with a note back saying they were only using like 50 users for the initial tests....
And yes..to me $80 a year would be a deal killer...just buy a new router each year.... 8-)
If more and more stuff goes to ad based revenue model, blocking those ads, which are almost all ignored as background noise anyhow, may well screew up otherwise helpful utilities...???

2 edits | ERRRRR I have the DIR-655 so why did I have to buy the 150 for $99? Course it did come with year sub so guess I payed 10 for the dumb device. SO post the beta already so we can test as well? |
|
 | reply to MrDoughBoy Common guys, please share the firmware - I have 1.05 and it is not that great...
Thanks in advance! |
|
 | At the moment there is a current major bug which most of us beta users just noticed, any secure web page you use such as American express or paypal and the web page currently timed out...
They have removed the beta firmware I guess to fix the major bug Ill post the new link for the DL when the new update is released... |

Re: [Info] DIR-655 SecurSpot v2.0 Beta 1.6 Firmware - Awesome! Hi,
Out of the blue, today I got a new email from DLink with the Beta v2.0 firmware (still firmware v1.6) with a 73 page user guide on how to set stuff up.
Seems to be fairly complete altho they list a few known issues with no currrent workaround. Part of the process if you enable all the securspot stuff is to uninstall your local anti-virus & firewall (or full disable them at least)...that can be quite a job in itself if you have more than a few clients.
I guess what this will end up coming down to, is exactly how much cash to maintain coverages, and just how well McAfee's AV/antispyware services work. This is surely a lot of potential time saving managing just the router controls instead of XX number of local PC's each with their own local AV/firewall,...
Lucky I am on a wireless client right now or I might be tempted to install the new Beta firmware and jump in to the pool....

Re: [Info] DIR-655 Beta 1.6 Firmware - OOpsie Hi,
Cancelled the Registration screen by oopsie, and now its totally inaccesible. Which effectively kills any ability to run the extra security stuff because I can't re-start the registration process. Anbody else see this ?
I have an item in the forum for the Beta Test...have to wait and see if its easily resolved....already tried the reinstall firmware drill..no go...

Have you tried going back to an earlier FW version? |

Re: [Info] DIR-655 Beta 1.6 Firmware - Awesome! Hi,
Well..No I haven't gone thru the trouble of reverting back to an earlier firmware say 1.05 then re-updating to see if the Beta firmware re-configures the registration wizard.
I guess thats the next step in the process...just have to wait til the kids are asleep so they don't jump all over me for messin with their WoW....

I understand about the Kidd's under foot, not the most conducive atmosphere for intellectual pursuits.
But I have to show my ignorance and ask... what is a WoW.
God I know I am going to regret asking |
