EVDO Questions...

I'm on satellite internet right now (I HATE IT!!!) and I recently bought a verizon phone with EV-DO Capabilities.... Throughout my house there are some places which get the EV icon to display (No bars though) But I read that Verizon only lets you download 5gB a month, which sucks, so I decided to look into sprint EV-DO. Now I have a couple of Questions

1.) Will an omni-directional antannae improve my 0-bars?
2.) What is the latency of Sprint?
3.) What is the speed?
4.) Since I know I can get Verizon, does that mean I can 100% get sprint?

THX in advance!!!

1) If you can currently pick up an EVDO connection, an omni mounted outside your home will definitely improve your signal.

2,3) Speed is a little faster on Sprint and there is no cap per month. Latency is also similar.

4) I put in the town listed under your username and it looks like EVDO is all around you but you are in a roaming area. I suggest getting a Sprint EVDO card and trying it and if it doesn't work, return it within 30 days.

I also recommend going with Millenicom Mobile Broadband. They resell Sprints EVDO for $49.99 a month with no taxes, fees, or 2-year contract. That is $10 cheaper than Sprint a month with no contract. Their customer service is also ALL based in the United States and they are VERY knowledgeable about their service.

Hope this helps you. PM me if you decide to go with Millenicom and I will help you get setup. Thanks

So what is the latency? (How many Ms?) Is it ok for online gaming like Quake, etc....

Is it free to roam on the Verizon network?

Can you roam on Verizon network 24/7?

Latency is anywhere from 100ms-250ms depending on signal and obstacles and whatnot.

Sprint does not roam on Verizon's EVDO network nor does Verizon roam onto Sprint's EVDO Network.

Sprint and Alltel do have a COMPLETE EVDO roaming roaming agreement which means they can both roam onto each other's highspeed networks for free. So if you don't get sprint EVDO you can roam onto Alltel's EVDO for free and vice versa. Alltel has more rural EVDO coverage areas.

Verizon has 0 EVDO roaming agreements so Sprint is better because them combined with alltel have way more EVDO coverage than Verizon does.

I would try Sprint first and if you get nothing with them, then try Verizon as the last option. Let me know

I covered this over at EVDOForums (yup, I'm the same Fox McCloud :P)

basically, if you're in a good location, you'll probably have around 100 ms to Google.com....and 140-200ms in a game....it's not the greatest latency, but still, overall, better than dial-up or satellite.

No you can't roam on Verizon's EVDO network; only their 1xRTT network which has a max speed of 144k and latency (to Google) around 300-350 ms (OUCH! Not as bad as satellite, but useless for online gaming).

the only EVDO network you can roam on is Alltel's EVDO network; and most of it is EVDO Revision 0.

Most of alltel is Rev.0 now but they also have plans to finish upgrading to Rev.A before the end of the year.

Fox McCloud, do you agree Sprint is probably the way to go now and see if it works? The coverage maps show EVDO all around his town so he should try that first and then Verizon last choice is what I think.

Oh yeah, you answered me on the other forums, lol

Thanks for all the stuff. So if I'm like four miles away from the orang on the map can I get it?

hard to say; I'd just "try and see".

$49.99 a month with no fees, taxes, or contracts.

PX-500 for Free or Novatel U720 for $49.99

They resell Sprint EVDO so its the same as sprint. PM me and I will help you through the process. It is a manual process and is not all automated and fancy.

that website is ok, but you never really own the equipment....

if you want to own the equipment though, go to www.sprint.com/sero and user "gary.forsee@sprint.com" as the e-mail address; you can get the S720 (debatably the best EVDO Revision A card currently available...PCMCIA wise) for $100 with a monthly cost of $49.99.

You own the equipment after one year. But who cares about owning the equipment. You can cancel at any time in two years. I would rather have a way out than to own equipment.

The AC595 is also a very high rated PCMCIA card. There is also a Franklin CDU-680 coming out shortly for $49.99 at millenicom that has the Sprint connection managers for Windows, Mac, and Linux built in to the USB adapter so there is no need to install anything.

I would highly recommend going with Millenicom. If you want to cancel, why would you need the device anyway, right?

Fox McCloud, which people give you the 30-day trial?

1 edit
Sprint and Sprint SERO (www.sprint.com/sero) ...those 2 come to mind.

3GStore (whom I personally detest) has a return policy of 14 days.

Millenicom also has a trial which I have talked to them about. They said try it anywhere you want for a month and if it doesn't work out for you, just return everything back to us for a full refund.

Their customer service and support is MUCH better than Sprint. It is a no-brainer to go with them over Sprint directly. I don't know why anyone would go with Sprint direct now. This is cheaper with no contract.

Hmmm... Now I'm thinking about ordering service from Millenicom, as it's the same price as SERO, so do they supply you with antennas and amps?

They don't sell those accessories direct. A good place to order them is »3gstore.com They sell good Wilson Omnis and other antennas as well as an amplifier.

So say my reception isn't good enough, or that I get no bars at all, even with the point-to-point antennas, I can return the stuff to 3g store and Millenicom, for full refund and free shipping?

You have 30 days for Millenicom to return everything. I think you are out shipping though but that's not much at all. 3GStore has a 14-day policy and you are also out shipping through them too.

So if nothing works, you'll probably have ended up paying $30 for shipping maybe a little more. It's not much. You will probably end up picking it up though especially with an external antenna.

Cool. Now I just need to know what a good (i.e. cheap) Booster antenna and amp is. (I think I'll buy a Kyocera Router) Also, what's the best USB card from Millenicom?
