Essential Apps

I recently acquired a PowerPC G4 from work and have it up and running at home. I was wondering what apps you guys have that you instantly install on any new mac you get, you know those must haves that make life easier.

I've added these apps so far:
Firefox
Thunderbird
Quicksilver
Cyberduck (ftp)

What other programs do you love?

If there is another thread about this I'm sorry... did a search and didn't see one come up. -- Thanks.

I'd take the time to insult your intelligence, but you probably wouldn't get it.

Re: Essential Apps

VLC for playing video. It's free and covers a shitload of formats.

I would not call Thunderbird a must have.

Especially since Mail does a fine job.

I don't care for Thunderbird myself, too buggy still. It didn't even integrate with the OS X address book last I checked. I like, and use, Mail.app.

From my Applications, the first apps I would install (not in any order):

1Passwd (password management)
Amadeus Pro (audio editing)
AppFresh (software update tracking)
Firefox (or BonEcho)
iGTD (time management)
Notebook (info mgmt, notes, etc.)
PDFLab (pdf mgmt)
Shadowkiller
Text Wrangler (lightweight text editing)
SmallImage2 (image resizing)
Vienna (RSS reader)
PathFinder (finder replacement)
Coda (html editor/coding tool)

Quicksilver and Growl as already mentioned.

Firefox - for those few sites that don't play well with Safari.

VisualHub - an inexpensive, fast media converter.

Roxio Toast - an excellent DVD/CD creation suite.

AppFresh - a slick method for keeping all of your third-party Apps up-to-date.

I HATE the term "acquired"! We should willingly ban it and just generally agree to never use it again.

I HATE the term "acquired"! We should willingly ban it and just generally agree to never use it again.
Generally, when something is suggested to be done away with, the mental giant who had the brain fart to do away with it, offers up an alternative.
I see no alternative.

acquire |??kw?(?)r| verb [ trans. ] buy or obtain (an object or asset) for oneself. See note at get . • learn or develop (a skill, habit, or quality) : you must acquire the rudiments of Greek | I've never acquired a taste for whiskey. • achieve (a particular reputation) as a result of one's behavior or activities. PHRASES acquired taste 1 a thing that one has come to like only through experience : pumpkin pie is an acquired taste. 2 a liking of this kind : an acquired taste for tobacco. DERIVATIVES acquirable adjective acquirer noun ORIGIN late Middle English acquere, from Old French aquerre, based on Latin acquirere ‘get in addition,’ from ad- ‘to’ + quaerere ‘seek.’ The English spelling was modified ( c. 1600) by association with the Latin word.

Re: Essential Apps

I know the meaning. It's just I've known plenty of people to use it as slang for "don't ask how I got this [because it was probably stolen/otherwise]". Which is where the hate comes in.

I guess it all comes down to what you do on your mac. Besides the basic apps that come with a new mac for me it the essentials are:
Transmit
Coda
Feeder
Accordance
Fission

I like Menumeters to display all kind of information in the free space in the menu bar. You can fill up the bar with all kinds of geeky info that can let you know when your Hard drive is being accessed, processor temps and loadings and all kinds of stuff that is totally useless otherwise
