| [OOL] Extreme Slowness
Starting last night (8/22/07) my connection has been very sluggish. Basically what happens is:
1) I type any URL 2) The browser displays "waiting for..." in the lower left corner 3) I wait for a minute or more for the page to display
I ran a speedtest and it appears the uploading is the problem because that portion of the test wasn't able to complete (it would say sending to speedgauge.optonline.net) and eventually time out.
My modem is a Motorola SBV5120. |

| There's an idea!
Seriously - yes I did, and all I got was lame customer service and some tech telling me all the things I can't do & how a tech would have to come out (for a fee).
So my solution was to call Verizon FIOS and try them out. Less per month, no contract, free installation, 30 day trial, faster access, and no headache. We'll see how they are in the long run, but they sure pacified my immediate scenario. |

Yet you continue to endorse OOL by being a paying customer. Something doesn't add up! |

1 edit | reply to Redcooper02 What are your settings?
Are you wired or wireless? Do you have a router? Have you tried resetting all your equipment - modem, router and PC? Do you have multiple PCs? Are they all showing the same speed?
Where are you located?
Run a tweak test at »/tweaks and post the URL of your results page.
As for FIOS, the service has been fine but the billing has been hit or miss. Folks with FIOS have numerous billing issues from huge initial charges for services which weren't ordered/performed, charges for items not subscribed too, issues with triple play billing takes months to kick in, etc. The service has been fine though.
Also folks have started to get a letter from Verizon about a price increase of $5/mo for Internet service. It's even gone to folks that are new and on a 1 year contract. I haven't received any letter yet. |

| reply to Redcooper02 Most of the techs are morons. If you should get lucky and speak to one demand a supervisor, and don't take "is there something I can help you with?" for an answer. They just don't want to let you talk to a Supv.
When a tech has to come out I demand a supv. I had a problem with my box and the 1st tech was clueless. |

| reply to Redcooper02 Contrary to what people tell you here, tweaking is not necessary.
You should be able to get an excellent signal no matter where you are in the service area, providing everything on CV's end is working. I have moved from one service area to another and still get a very good signal.
If you are tweaking there is something else wrong that you are unaware of, or you are one of those people that whatever speed OOL offers it is never enough. |

| reply to Redcooper02 Thanks for the lively discussion so far on my OOL problem. Believe it or not, the down & up speeds I've been getting as of Saturday have been AMAZING, although there's a bit of a latency issue when I play World Of Warcraft. At any rate, I'm going ahead with FIOS on Wednesday & will post my experience once it's installed.
Thanks again to everyone.

| Good luck with Fios i hope to join you soon with that and get rid of the problems with OOL. So far a few of my friends switched to Fios and love every second of it and all of the problems with OOL just went away when they got Fios and they never got any of the billing problems people say they have. |

1 edit | reply to MxxCon said by MxxCon :sounds like usual crappy OOL dns servers. try to use opendns instead. Exactly. Although answering Gekk's questions may help better isolate things.Sifting through the "get fios" fixes is rough.
I use Verizon's dns servers 4.2.2.5 4.2.2.6 I also entered the 2 verizon in my router as well as 2 from my easyDNS subscription.
I was useing trewalkDNS(ex-BindPE) with and without DNSKong but had found some days I need both dns servers off and just connect straight to verizon or easyDNS nameservers. I could just set my clients to my router address, which I do have as an option. The way windows works from my understanding is it will take the first reponse which I believe would be my router anyway.
edit; Almost forgot...things are instant now, much better. I also got rid of OOL as a home page, that site takes forever. I have cached it to load faster with dnscache plugin in Outpost, that worked too. -- Live Free or Die!

| reply to Redcooper02 It's been 3 days since I had Verizon FIOS installed and it's been amazing. The latency and bugginess I had with OOL are HISTORY.
Now, being fair, when I first got OOL I remember saying the same thing. Something happened over the years though since I had them, the QOS really never grew and the WOW factor was only there at the inception.
Hopefully FIOS will continue to wow me and the QOS will be as good or better going forward. |
