| Re: NJ Teen unlocks iPhone As they should? You know the problem with cell phones in the US.. they all suck except this one phone. It does a ton of things, but it sucks too. It's just like when AT&T was the only people you could "lease" a phone from and they sucked. Look at the phones you can put into your house today. AT&T would not have made them as fast since they'd just release a phone with x feature, then to get the new x feature you'd have to upgrade.
Phones in other countries are leaps and bounds ahead of what we call a cell phone.

From the article:
There is apparently no U.S. law against unlocking cell phones. Last year, the Library of Congress specifically excluded cell-phone unlocking from coverage under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Among other things, the law has been used to prosecute people who modify game consoles to play a wider variety of games.

Yeah, but if you unlock it, is it still the software to which they can revoke your liscense?
And how exactly will they do that anyway? The hell if anyone will let them touch their phone, and I highly doubt that kind of thing will hold up. It's one thing with a piece of purchased software (and I'm not even happy about that (or sure it'll hold up)), but it's another with a device so integrated with its software software.

If you signed a contract with AT&T (or Cingular), then you have to abide by the terms of that contract (unless said terms are illegal, etc.) If you unlock your phone and don't pay AT&T, they most certainly have the right to get their "Early Termination Fee" out of you; if you unlock the phone but continue to pay AT&T, I doubt they care.
The cellular providers are entitled to contacts because that is how they make the service available. My understanding is that one can "opt-out" of the contract when one signs up and be on the "pay by the month" plan but it still might have an early termination fee.
Or, put another way, if you don't like contacts, sign up with a provider who doesn't require them.

You are free to sell anything you own that has been legally obtained. Software & music included. Here in the US that is known as illegal. You can do whatever you want. Apple does not provide an unlocking service at no cost, so as long as your unlocking did not damage the phone the warranty is still in full force. Also just using it with another network would not void the warranty either.
Guess why there's no iPhone in Europe? Phone locking is illegal except for Germany & France (.. if my memory serves me correctly...) the countries where it's rumored their might be a release).

Why people in the US enjoy bending over and getting reamed without lub and then taking the side of the rapist is just beyond insane. You can do exactly what you say. Type in "world phones" in Google and you will find plenty of unlocked GSM phones that you can use with any compatible service provider throughout the world including the United States. I've purchased plenty of phones over the years this way. But when the iPhone comes along and people feel screwed they flip out like its the end of the world. If you don't want the iPhone, don't buy one. Buy an unlocked phone of your choosing. Give it a rest already.

| Unchecked and unrestrained can be a good thing as well. I say, let them try and stop people from hacking through technical means but when they start trying to tell people what they can and cannot do legally with stuff that is bought and paid for I gotta draw the line!
If they cannot make stuff secure enough to prevent me from using it in a way it was not intended (a way that prevents them from maximising their profit) that should NEVER EVER be MY problem. It should be THEIR problem!
There should be a test for legal decisions. "Does this idiotic law make it the purchasers problem if they find a way to reduce the purchasee's profit from it". If so, then kill the law.

| What good is unlocking the iPhone? You think Verizon is going to allow it on their network? And even if they did, they don't have the back end for it. Your 'Visual Voicemail' wouldn't work.
I think people forget the entire reason Apple did the deal with AT&T in the first place is because they are the only ones that were willing to create a new back end for the iPhone. -- Verizon FiOS 15/2 subscriber since 8/1/05 | Mac owner since 1990 | FreeBSD user since 2005 | Anyone who is unwilling to learn is entitled to absolutely nothing. | sudo sandwich | EDIT: I seldom post without an edit.
