I just don't understand this mentality in the US that you should just listen to big brother, let them make all these oppressive rules/laws and if you don't follow them they will help make a bunch of lawyers rich!
Just about everywhere else in the world that has not been 'oppressed' with CDMA and all the locking crap, you can get a phone from whoever you want and use it with any provider you want and switch SIM cards to whoever you want whenever you want!
Why people in the US enjoy bending over and getting reamed without lub and then taking the side of the rapist is just beyond insane. |

| reply to kenandles Unchecked and unrestrained can be a good thing as well. I say, let them try and stop people from hacking through technical means but when they start trying to tell people what they can and cannot do legally with stuff that is bought and paid for I gotta draw the line!
If they cannot make stuff secure enough to prevent me from using it in a way it was not intended (a way that prevents them from maximising their profit) that should NEVER EVER be MY problem. It should be THEIR problem!
There should be a test for legal decisions. "Does this idiotic law make it the purchasers problem if they find a way to reduce the purchasee's profit from it". If so, then kill the law.
Ok, I'm waiting for the first brainwashed smart ass to find some loophole that would serve to contradict my utopian claims. |

A lot of the time it's ignorance, but even the dumbest people I know get riled up when we talk about phone/cable companies, especially those regarding mobile phones. Quite honestly put, Mobile Phone companies are right up there with car salespeople (the people who sell cell phones are crooks), the customer service reps are crooks, and if you look at them funny, BAM! Two more years of contract b!!!!atch!
But the cellphone has become such a staple here that people do whatever they have to, in order to pay for their overpriced service. |

| reply to kenandles Or do what I do. Simply refuse to be bribed by a cheap phone in exchange for some overpriced contract term!
I ONLY do month to month pay as you go! If Provider A makes that difficult or less cost effective I go with Provider B. If everyone did that the consumer would gain the upper hand. |

Why people in the US enjoy bending over and getting reamed without lub and then taking the side of the rapist is just beyond insane. You can do exactly what you say. Type in "world phones" in Google and you will find plenty of unlocked GSM phones that you can use with any compatible service provider throughout the world including the United States. I've purchased plenty of phones over the years this way. But when the iPhone comes along and people feel screwed they flip out like its the end of the world. If you don't want the iPhone, don't buy one. Buy an unlocked phone of your choosing. Give it a rest already. |

What good is unlocking the iPhone? You think Verizon is going to allow it on their network? And even if they did, they don't have the back end for it. Your 'Visual Voicemail' wouldn't work.
I think people forget the entire reason Apple did the deal with AT&T in the first place is because they are the only ones that were willing to create a new back end for the iPhone. -- Verizon FiOS 15/2 subscriber since 8/1/05 | Mac owner since 1990 | FreeBSD user since 2005 | Anyone who is unwilling to learn is entitled to absolutely nothing. | sudo sandwich | EDIT: I seldom post without an edit. |

@shawcable.net | reply to kenandles For starters it's a GSM phone so it won't work on a CDMA network. GSM providers allow anything that accepts their SIM cards. That's the beauty of GSM |
