| Comcast remote won't control volume
I just had Comcast digital TV installed on two TVs. On my main TV I use a standalone TiVo, so I use the TiVo remote and its not an issue (I mention this so what I say later will make more sense).
On the second TV (which is a Panasonic TV/VCR combo - not that we've used the VCR in years), its only hooked up with the digital box. I've programmed the remote to control the TV - the codes that work are 21062 and 20162 (its one of the newest remotes that uses 5 digit codes).
However, when I go to either of these codes, the TV power and channel numbers work just fine, *BUT* when I press the volume keys or mute key, nothing happens. And when I say nothing, I mean nothing. It doesn't even light up the 'tv' button up top which would mean 'Im trying to send a command to the tv now'. All other codes light up the tv button up top - they don't actually work to control anything, but they at least appear to be trying. But the codes that actually do control the tv power, don't even seem to send anything when I press the volume keys.
Its as if the remote is saying, 'I know that code and I can't control volume on that one so I won't try'. The problem is though, the remotes, as configured by default, controlled the volume just fine. I know this because a) my gf told me she remembered the remote controlling the volume before I programmed it and, b) the main tv's cable remote, which I never touched because I'm using the TiVo setup, controls the volume on the 2nd tv just fine.
So my questions are: 1) Is there any way to convince the remote to even *try* to do the volume along with the 20162 or 21062 codes? or otherwise, 2) What is the default 5 digit code that controlled the volume in the first place? Maybe we could just remember them and program the remote back and forth rather than carrying two remotes? Comcast support said 0993, but this requires 5 digits - so I tried 00993, 10993, 20993, 09930, but the remote doesn't accept any of those as valid.

| So for anyone else who runs into the same problem, I figured out a 'mostly solution'. I found the instructions for the remote (which the cable guy kindly left behind the tv) and followed the instructions for the 'volume unlock' feature.
This means that rather than the remote trying to control the tv's volume in each mode (this is called being 'locked' to the tv volume), it controls the volume of the device whose mode its in. So when its in cable box mode, it control the cable box volume. I set the tv volume to a nice medium that gives the cable box volume a good range.
The code to do this did involve 993, but without any extra digits (the woman was wrong to tell me 0993, and even more wrong to tell me that 10993 for the 5-digit remotes). It also involved the vol+ or vol- buttons, so check your instructions.
The cable box remote still won't control tv volume even though it controls the tv power, but at least we can change volume and power all from one remote now. |

| reply to fredct I too have a Panasonic TV/VCR combo, and the exact same problem. I have tried both the panasonic TV codes as well as the Combo codes (I have the remote that uses 5 digit codes) and none allow me to control the TV volume.
I also have the issue with the remote not even showing a device light when the volume buttons are depressed. |
