| [speed/latency] verizon speed test VS dslreports speed test
Is there a significant difference between the verizon speed test tool (verizon.net/speedtest) and the dslreports speed test?
To keep a long painful story short, Verizon support had me run their speed test and it came up at 800 kbps. Each time I re-ran it, the speed went up -- over 2000. I've been running it side by side (more or less) with dslreports speed test, and verizon's ALWAYS comes up faster, sometimes by a little bit, sometimes by 1100 to 1200 kbps.
I'm trying to gather info to argue with verizon support. They say my connection is fine, I have "excellent speed". |

Yes, theirs is notoriously inaccurate. The Speakeasy tests are pretty good, and they let you test to different servers in different locations from one place. Exactly what are your issues? |

| reply to panoons I'm in the IT field, but like many of us, I know far too little about networking so I'm a little unsure how to answer exactly what my issues are. In laymans terms, my verizon dsl connection got so slow that I lost a days work. (Im a consultant, work from home office.) Today is better but not good, 400 to 700 kbps.
Several calls to verizon yielded only 1 conclusion: "your connection is very fast, no problems."
So I'm trying (when I can stay connected) to gather info. I did sign up for line monitoring, but havent figured out the dynamic dns thing yet. Hopefully I can give them some info to force them to look into this.
FYI, I live in a university town and approx 7000 students started arriving yesterday. Verizon insists that has no effect whatsoever, but I think that a crock. |

| Yes, it can have an effect, and I think there was a big issue with it in your area about the same time they came back from Christmas break as well. Anyway, try pulling your modem stats and posting them from here: »192.168.1.1/transtat.htm. This is for the Westell modems, and if you have a separate router, you must remove it, assign you pc a temp. static ip of 192.168.1.2, and connect it directly to the modem. |

| OK ... how do you know this was a problem last xmas in my area?? Also, if that indicates that this is a very temporary problem, I will learn to live with it. I'm in a bit of a panic because I have few other high speed options, and I do work from my home office so if my dsl is dead, I have a very large employement problem.
anyway, transceiver stats as requested: Transceiver Revision: 01.00.09.00 Vendor ID Code: 4 Line Mode: G.DMT Mode Data Path: Fast Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864 Margin (dB) 21.0 16.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 43.5 20.5 Transmit Power (dBm) 8.7 11.1
I do have linksys router as well as the westell 327w, but at the moment I've disconnected it (and 3 other PC's) completely. (No change in download speeds, as expected.) |

| no, I didnt get hit with it at xmas, I was traveling on business quite a bit so I must have missed it. I was just surprised that anybody would know anything about our dinky town. (population 6000 when the students go home.) Have to admit though, if dsl speed were the only problem caused by the students we'd all be a lot happier.
Line test results from 8:40 this morning: »/linequality/nil/2270368 Line test results from 6:50 this evening (now): »/linequality/nil/2270591
I do appreciate your assistance very much, thank you. |

| Well, I'm not too far from you, and while I've heard of your town, I don't know anything about it. I'm not even sure if the issue I'm referring to affected you, but who knows. Anyway, are your speeds still low? Between the LQT and your modem stats, things actually look good. Maybe try a few more tests from Speakeasy? Try both NY and CA. |

panoons Premium join:2007-08-24 Kutztown, PA | download speed right now - 7:27pm - is 181 kbps from NY, 961 from miami, 1600 from Palo Alto CA. Nice consistency, eh? |

Jodokast96 R.I.P Bassman442 Premium join:2005-11-23 Erial, NJ | Actually, the fact that your speeds are getting better the farther from you the server is could be a clue. Try running a Tweak Test from the Tools section. |

| I actually did run the tweak early this afternoon. I downloaded DrTCP, and set the RWIN from blank to 32154, rebooted. (tweak said to set it between 32154 and 85278, I figured I'd try the low end today, mid tomorrow, 85278 sunday.) Didnt appear to make a difference.
I also changed the MTU from auto to 1492
No visible difference.
One thing that keep sjumping back to me i swhy this occurred on all 4 of my PC's yesterday. Seems to indicate to me that this is not a PC problem.
Farther = better is a clue? Perhaps my dw is right, I'm clueless. |

Jodokast96 R.I.P Bassman442 Premium join:2005-11-23 Erial, NJ | No, not clueless, but that is a potential indication of a not so widely known issue with Verizon in some cases. Getting a look at those Tweak Test results would give me a little more info. |

| oops, thought I pasted it in: »/tweakr/block:···a=normal
I wasnt sure about the "normal" setting for the connection, I do use a vpn regularly so I think I should be setting this to WinXP pppoe, but Im not certain. And changing it didnt appear to effect the recommendations. |

| In the future, you want to use RouterPPPoE. Ok, open DRTcp. Select your NIC in the dropdown box. Set all of the others to "Default". Blank out the MTU box, and for Recieve Window set it at 63888. Save, reboot, run another Tweak Test along with another series of tests from here: »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest. Just run one for NY, one for DAL, and one for your pic of the West Coast. |

I'd try the default RWIN of 65535.
Use 3000 for the Download Speed kbit/s: value...not 3360.
For your "distant" server, use lax.speakeasy.net.
Thanks. |

But: verizon's speed test only shows 584 kbps dslreports.com speed test (NY): 103 dslreports.com speed test (Dal): 1014 dslreports.com speed test (LA): 320
and now the speakeasy.net site is NY: 983 Dal: 2524 LA: 2689

| Forget the Verizon test. Okay, 2 questions. First, what was the difference betweent the first set of Speakeasy tests and the last set? Second, are you definitely hitting save in DRTcp? For some reason the RWIN still keeps reading off the charts and not what you are inputing. |

| verizon speed test is forgotten. But what about the dslreports speed test? Thats the one I've looked at for the past year ...
Difference between the first and second sets of speakeasy tests was merely a couple minutes. I ran all the tests consecutively in the order listed.
Recheck DrTcp, yes, I saved - values are as listed. Possible that the modem is ignoring? |

| Not that the DSLReports are bad, I'm just used to dealing with the Speakeasy ones and know for certain they are always good. Besides, that little red ball on it helps with what I think is the issue.
The steps we are taking are not doing anything to the modem, but rather tweaking the PC. I'll explain a bit more once I'm certain the issue is what I think it is. Ok, now we're going to try a different value for the Receive Window. Run DRTcp again, and set it at 13068. Save, exit, reboot, and run the tests again. |
