After several email excahnges with Microsoft on validation problems, I just received this:

Thank you for your response.

I’m sorry to inform you that the Windows Genuine server might be down for few days. I have escalate the issue to our Genuine team, kindly try to validate again on Tuesday 28 Aug 2007.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Technical Support.

I called Windows Genuine Advantage customer service and spoke to a live contact - they are aware of the issue and are working as we speak on a fix for this.

This error started appearing after the last 2 automatic updates that I *unfortunately* elected to download and install (I usually delay it for a week or two!).

I did not download any other software and I know it is these 2 automatic updates because it was working one minute and then after the 2 updates, it stopped!

They do not have an ETA - but they took down my contact# and said I will be contacted if there is any update.

I did mention to them that I have an office trip on Monday and I cannot have this problem until Monday - so they are aware of the urgency as well.

I encourage others to contact them and let them know of this - this should have *NEVER* happened!.

Thanks!

NOTE:

The link used in the original post
»forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/Sho···iteID=25 is in regards to issues reported with VISTA WGA validation failures after latest Vista updates were downloaded and installed.

Just to clarify....

On my Vista or XP for that matter

here is the work around

1. TURN OFF WINDOWS AUTOMATIC UPDATES! turn them completly off!, no check and inform, no nothing...turn them complelty off!

2. Disable Windows Defender from checking for update before scanning.

3. Do not install any directx10 games, the new bioshock is part of the problem.

4.stay away from microsoft download center..do not download anything that requires validation!

5. For safe Measure"Disable" BITS(Background Intelligent Transfer Service) what Windows uses for automatic updates and what it uses to validate you each time it checks

see screenshot:

my Vista(Knock on Wood) has not been affected, i came home, and checked it out everything is fine, but reccommend follwing the advice i posted above if you want your computer to stay genuine

regards!

Woody

Re: Just keeps getting better (not)... Windows Validation Issues

The validation server appears to be still up. I went to download center to see if I could take advantage of the server being down so I could download the latest DirectX update for XP Pro without having to "show my papers" which I refuse to do..they are very authentic but I don't like being called a thief when I am not one. (This isn't Nazi Germany...I don't think). Anyhow, what happened was instead of no validation procedure which is what should have happened if there was no server up, I got a message that my computer cannot be validated. It has been validated when it was new at download center.

as long as you have a Av/Firewall..and such you will be fine until tuesday when microsft has said they will have it fixed

you cna live for 3 days without updates

besides...its either try and download/update and get the "your a theif" messafe and alot of functionality will be disabled on windows

or you can do what i said, have full functionality, and come tuesday evening, re-enable everything then update/validate or what not

Maybe it is just as well that I installed XP on a separate partition on my new machine (came with Vista). That increases the chances that I will have at least one workable operating system.

I'm actually surprised that I did not run into activation problems with XP. I installed from the same CD as I had used on my previous (now defunct) hardware, and with the same key. I had guessed that they might be checking for use on a different machine from where originally installed, but so far no problems with updates.

Further clarification. I also have Linux installed on the same machine, so that gives me near certainty that I will have a usable operating system. And linux is my preferred system anyway.

Re: Just keeps getting better (not)... Windows Validation Issues

A couple years ago I fried the mobo on another machine. After I replaced it I had to spend 15 minutes on the phone with MS getting grilled before I finally said "Screw this", hung up and installed a WGA crack.
(yes I have heard the stories about how phone reactivation is a breeze and only takes a couple minutes)
I paid for the product. If they want to hire me as a phone consultant to get it to work their way fine.If not I'll just do it myself from now on.
