| Re: Acanac Free Trial Not sure how long it's good for but the offer is only until Aug. 28th. Here's what I got from Red Flag Deals post:
Try out our DSL Network Free of Charge. If you currently have DSL with Bell Sympatico or any other DSL provider (Note it might not work with all), please read below.
How does this work?
Since we all use the same DSLAM equipment, www.acanac.ca will provide you with PPPoE login information and you simply input this into your existing DSL modem, DSL Router or DSL PPPoE software. By inputing your new PPPoE login info you bypass your existing DSL provider and your traffic is sent through our Network.
Free offer ends August 28, 2007
Get your Free PPPoE login info by simply filling out this form: »https://www.acanac.com/cgi-bin/acanac.cg···DSL.html
*FAQ's:*
Do I still get unlimited downloads during this Free Period?
Yes, all Free trial accounts come with unlimited downloads and uploads.
Do I get regular support while using your free trial DSL?
No. All support will be limited to this forum. If you call our regular support line or email our support department they will not know you exist.
Do I need to contact my current provide to take advantage of this offer?
No. All you need to do is change the PPPoE login info.
How do I order your service after the Free offer ends on August 28 2007?
At any time you can place your order online.
Our current Promo is $18.95* based on a one year term. Your total fee for the year including tax will be $227.40* Canadian.
*(If you do not have a DSL modem Acanac will charge you an additional $49.95 security deposit fee. This is returned once the modem is returned.)*
If you have any other questions please feel free to post them in this forum.

I'm like you, I'd rather pay each month and be able to cancel anytime. I would use them as a backup login though if they offered a good price for a yearly contract. Currently pay $10 a month for backup, if they charged less I would consider it.

Right now I am test driving Acanac too.
I have good speeds:
However, my speed profile is currently set by Bell Sympatico at 5056/800. I am planning to quit Sympatico when my unlimited contract expires towards the end of November.
I have one concern for Acanac though. I am afraid that the good speeds that I am enjoying right now with Acanac test drive won't necessarily reflect the reality once I quit Bell Sympatico.
There is a common problem regarding Acanac for ex-Sympatico members joining Acanac. They enjoyed good speeds with Sympatico, then all of a sudden speed profile problems when switched over to Acanac.
TekSavvy doesn't seem to have this problem of getting the best speed profile for their new customers. I remember Paul L. once mentioned that TekSavvy might have a dedicated Bell Rep working for it, but Acanac doesn't have one yet.
So I am afraid that the 5056/800 that I have right now with Sympatico, I won't be able to get the same thing with Acanac, despite the fact that I am test driving Acanac @ 5056/800 right now.
This is my primary concern with Acanac and make me thinking twice about joining them, despite my good test drive with their free DSL account.

| Re: Acanac Free Trial That's not necessarily true. Your profile is determined by your distance from the CO. Unfortunately not everybody is within the recommend distance and they wont be able to get 5Mbps.
The following is what happens when a Sympatico user moves to our service.
With Sympatico they might have put you on a remote, but when we submit an order to Bell for your new DSL connection they might put you on a different one altogether. Depending on the distance you might get a higher or lower profile. Our clients have encountered both scenarios, but I would say the majority of the time your speeds will remain exactly the same.

I'm currently using my cell as my primary phone line, and haven't really considered VoIP, but if there were a 1-year free trial, I would definately give VoIP a shot.
I also have a friend who is currently using Teliphone. A free trial might convince him to give Acanac a try, since your per-month fee is cheaper after the trial. What's going on these days with number portability between Canadian VoIP providers these days?

I am still having problems understanding your business model. What I know so far is this, companies have to pay $20/month to bell for access to dsl network. You are are offering dsl less than that to the customers. How can you survive? Or may be there something we don't understand.
You are offering 50G of web space for $4/month. also an amazing offer, voip is also same story, $9/month all features included. All of your offers are too good to be true or suspicious in other words.

1 edit | Re: Acanac Free Trial Thank you for your comments.
Lets start with our DSL service: Your correct that we charge less than what Bell charges us. In fact it will takes us roughly 3 years before we make up the losses for every new DSL client. We loose about $7-$8 each and every month during the first year of service. These losses include bandwidth, Bell charges, tech support and and everything else thats involved in offering DSL service. Simply put we are subsidizing your DSL service from Bell.
Now the big question is how do we make money. The promo is only available on the first year of service and for new clients only. The second year prices for our DSL service go up to $33.95 per month based on a one year term. Our biggest concern is client attrition during the second year of service. Fortunately our client attrition rates have remained low. The fact that we offer extra free features with our DSL plans help keep the attrition rate low. For example we offer 100GB of storage with every DSL order and we will soon offer an Online PC cable of 24Mbps download and 15Mbps upload. We are currently taking Beta testers.
Lets go on to our Voip service:
Our Voip prices are not promos. What you see is what you get. Please keep in mind that our $9.95 plan is targeting clients that have a Voip ATA or will be buying one. The features we offer are just a click on the server. We could charge more for each individual feature, but we don't have the marketing dollars of companies like Rogers or Bell. It's more important for us to get referrals than to make a few extra bucks per month. That fact that we include everything for one low rate also reduced our attrition rate. We are proud of the fact that compared to industry standers our Voip attrition rate is extremely low.
Web Hosting service: We get this questions allot and the simple answer is our size. Most people don't realize how many clients we host. We currently hosting over 40K clients. Please also keep in mind that not every client goes for the cheapest plan. In fact our Bronze plan does not even include MySQL. We have been in the Web hosting industry for over 9 years now. This is our bread and butter. As for the space we offer it's perfectly clear that we are overselling to a degree. This does not mean that you would not be able to use your allocated space or bandwidth, but it just means that a large percentage of the client base does not. At this moment a small % of the client base is using up 90% percent of our hosting resources.
There is no physical address on your website:
Maybe you missed it , but we do have a physical address in our website. It's locate in our contact us page at the following URL. »acanac.ca/support/contactus.php Just look to the left. We also have a small retail store located on Bloor Street in Toronto. Here is a link to a small picture of the store: »acanac.org/photos/b8/e5/ff/b8e5f···250.jpeg We also welcome visitors to our Mississauga office. Please just send me a PM and I would be more than happy to show you our office space and server room.
It is true that it will take time to earn trust in this community. Over the next several months we will offer a few promos as olive branches. In fact for the free Voip promo we will not even request any billing information. It will be a no strings attached 1 year free deal. We hope to offer this to about 500 users on this site.

| I'd also like to know if Acanac offers any discounts for combined Internet and VoiP services.
I think people are most concerned about the billing issue. The USD vs CAD issue and quick resolution to overcharge are the most important to me. I don't want to get trapped.

| I tried the speedtest this morning as well, one of the server i tested the speed also shows about the same speed as what Scoop has posted, even when i log back in to my sympatico account...
Anyway, i tried the test using a different server, and the speed was much better (~4kMbps)
So far the trial account seems good. My next step is to find a decent dsl modem for myself.
Does anyone know if we sign up with Acanac for one year, and if we have to move during the year, what happen to the contract? Can we continue the contract at the new place? will there be extra setup charge? What if the new place does not have dsl service?

Since we are running same promo two months in a row at redflagdeals we decided to leave last months accounts active until the end of September. Your speeds may very depending on the server you testing it on. You can always use our own speed test page as comparison. »www.acanac.ca/speedtest/

You can continue the contract in your new location. Also your first move is free. Every other move would cost $25. If your new place does not support DSL service we would refund you the remainder of your term.
