Comcast is doing some major upgrades here now that they've assumed Adelphia's operations (we were transitioned earlier this year). Actually, we got HSI in late 2000, or early 2001. Last time I checked, DSL was considered HSI. When I checked in February, 2001, Comcast cable HSI was not available, but Pacific Bell DSL was. That is when I signed up.

I still have the door-knob hanger a Comcast rep left; with an expiration date on the offer of 3/31/05. They went from the old gray hard line to new coax, which had originally been installed by ATTBI, but never lit up by them.
I don't know if that part of the plant is included in the upgrade; but nothing has been changed on the poles since then. Comcast HSI was not even available here until that work was completed.

Yes, speeds are extremely slow (if working at all) in the evening and early morning, unusable, and this has been going on for weeks/months here in Milpitas. |

From what I've heard, the upgrade will be to 1000 MHz. According to a tech who was out here about three weeks ago, Sunnyvale (and those other cities) will actually be beyond what the other areas are. |

That's what our system is up here in Mendocino County, we were an Adelphia area, and were transitioned to Comcast earlier this year. They are doing a ton of upgrades up here, and CDV, OnDemand and more channels are coming soon. |

Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Milpitas and a few other cities’ are still 550 systems. We don’t have OnDemand or get near the number of channels the 750 and 860 systems get. Comcast is just trying to get these older systems up to par with the rest of the Bay Area. |

San Jose is a large city and probably the same head end as Sunnyvale. The upgrades will all probably finish around the same time. They probably are going from a 550Mhz system to some in the range of 850-1000Mhz system. That will be a very good thing for the Bay Area. |

Sunnyvale is part of the massive Bay Area upgrade Comcast is "working on." They announced it would be an 18-month project back in December 2006 to upgrade Sunnyvale as well as a few other Bay Area cities that were sorely needing an upgrade.
I don't know what the remifications are for HSI, but it will apparently nearly double their bandwidth in those areas.
I'm a Comcast HSI/Cable customer in Sunnyvale and we're missing many channels and OnDemand that other cities get. Once this is upgraded, those channels should be available and I would assume HSI should improve as well. A tech was recently at my place and he thought it would be done by the end of the year in Sunnyvale. We'll see. |

I remember when Comcast was performing the upgrade from 1.8 to 3.0 Mbps and we has issues for 3 weeks with packet loss and routing. I would just keep on them, call every couple days and they will resolve it. They are a big company and sometimes can't get out of their way but they eventually get it right. |

Yeah, note I said 'unofficially', as since my original post connectivity has been lost a few times in terms of routing ( cable termination seems fine ).
Maintenance on primetime Friday night extending into Saturday morning seems ambitious, and the official term used by Comcast was 'outage'. Nothing ostensible on the streets happening in terms of provisioning.
Hopefully what I'm seeing now is the final tapering stabilization from the outage.
Still, yes, very frustrating that the Silicon Valley build-out doesn't seem as good as other parts of the country.
I've been a customer since the @Home days, and generally speaking with my network engineer/architect hat on there have been few outages over that 6 year period. However, I do hope things stabilize, and this is not indicative of a trend.
