That increases the chances that I will have at least one workable operating system.<br><br>I'm actually surprised that I did not run into activation problems with XP.  I installed from the same CD as I had used on my previous (now defunct) hardware, and with the same key.  I had guessed that they might be checking for use on a different machine from where originally installed, but so far no problems with updates.<br><br>Further clarification.  I also have Linux installed on the same machine, so that gives me near certainty that I will have a usable operating system. I went to download center to see if I could take advantage of the server being down so I could download the latest DirectX update for XP Pro without having to "show my papers" which I refuse to do..they are very authentic but I don't like being called a thief when I am not one. (This isn't Nazi Germany...I don't think). Anyhow, what happened was instead of no validation procedure which is what should have happened if there was no server up, I got a message that my computer cannot be validated.
