2 edits | Well, sort of - there's still some work to do - if you have 50 or a hundred machines or more affected systems, you're gonna have a nice weekend getting your users ready to go for business Monday - or an interesting Monday morning.
said by link :Here are the specific steps that can be taken now to fix this issue on any affected system that is genuine: 1) Delete the data.dat file from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data (The drive letter will depend on where the OS was installed) 2) Revisit » www.microsoft.com/genuine/downlo···ate.aspx to confirm whether the machine is genuine. 3) Run wgatray.exe /b from the command line to ensure that the latest validation is updated for WGA Notifications. This command may be absent from the users machine and should not be considered an error. Please ensure that this is run as an Administrator. A reboot may be required to remove all non-genuine notifications. We also implemented a webpage with special instructions that will receive any traffic from systems that are running on product keys that could have been affected by this issue. WGA broke it automatically, but MS can't issue an update or a pushout MSI to do this for users? Hmmmm...
Hopefully this will be an event that drives change.
I recommended to my customers not to order machines with Vista yet - I feel sooo smart! |

Mr. Ballmer is hell-bent-for-leather that Microsoft Corp. will be in charge of the OS, not the user. Read any of his comments regarding WGA. He comes across as borderline psychotic. Any change will be in the 'tightening the screws' area, not in the relaxing of them. IMO, of course. |

| Sigh.... If Macs where not so damned expensive too get the best...
You'd think that with all the millions microsoft makes that they'd be able too loosen things up a bit. The people who buy genuine will always do so, unless there is no benefit or it's so damned tough too get a genuine copy too work... |

You have him pegged pretty well. He's scary! It doesn't take much research to come up with this opinion either... |

Note slashdot corrected the link to the fix instructions. the link originally posted contained a 2006 set of instructions. Please see update at »it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0···/1819248
said by »blogs.msdn.com/wga/archive/2007/···fix.aspx :We've been receiving reports on our forum and through customer service starting last night that Windows Vista validations have been failing on genuine systems. It looks now as though the issue has been resolved and validations are being processed successfully. Customers who received an incorrect validation response can fix their system by revalidating on our site (» www.microsoft.com/genuine). We encourage anyone who received a validation failure since Friday evening to do this now. After successfully revalidating any affected system should be rebooted to ensure the genuine-only features are restored. Thank heavens the poor SMB/enterprise guys won't have to manually repair the validation as the earlier information had indicated - they can sleep in tomorrow!!! |

I don't have a data.dat file in that location yet when I tried to get DirectX update, when I thought the validation server was down, I got an error message that this computer cannot be validated. But I don't have that file. Of course, I used my default browser, Firefox. I suppose Microsoft still hates Fx so much that it won't allow you to validate if on Fx. Guess Microsoft is really running scared... along with psychotic Ballmer it makes Microsoft look really good. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. And once again-- no Microsoft Corp. website is required to update DirectX. It's available at many other locations. |

1 edit | There is an alternate method (bottom of page)- no Plugin Installation: quote: If you think your Web browser is not configured to install or run the Windows Genuine Advantage Plug-in, you may use this alternate method.
..and click the 'continue' button... »www.microsoft.com/genuine/downlo···ate.aspx
which takes one to: »www.microsoft.com/genuine/downlo···Validate |

| Thanks, chachazz. I'm pretty sure my browser is configured properly. I actually have no plans to use that method, or any alternate method to install WGA. The whole issue seems to have been about Vista anyway, not XP, and I use XP. I thought at first maybe I could sneak in there and grab a couple of WGA-required updates that are already on my machine, but which I would like to have the installers for. Didn't happen, but I'll live. |
