[speed/latency] How are these transceiver stats? My download sp

I just spent a few hours rewiring some of my telephone lines and here is briefly what I did:

1) Connected CAT-5e from DSL jack directly to telco side of telephone box (all colored wires twisted together and all other wires twisted together).

2) Connected CAT-5e from "main in-house jack" to telephone box. (eg. the main telephone box on the side of my house now comes into my house into one jack. I have a DSL filter on this jack so every telephone jack in my house [aside from the special DSL jack] is automatically filtered).

3) Finally figured out how to connect Westell 6100 to Linksys WRT54G (running DD-WRT firmware).

Here are my transceiver statistics:

Transceiver Revision: 6.2.0.211
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 864
Margin (dB) 28.5 13.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 28.0 15.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 9.5 11.9

I've provisioned at 3 Mbps but I'm getting horrible download speeds. My closest speedtest.net gives me 600 Kbps download speed, but my 2nd closest gives me 2500 Kbps download speed.

My premium Fileplanet account only gets me 150 KB/s when my old Comcast cable modem used to get me 300 KB/s or more.

Please help!

I waited too long to cancel my "free trial" so I'm stuck with Verizon DSL for at least a year...

Re: [speed/latency] How are these transceiver stats? My downloa

SofaKng,
The line stats are excellent. It is not the physical connection

Don't know where you are located ( Registration is free and only takes a minute or two) so can't offer any area specific area..

Try going to the Speakeasy speedtest site and do a speed test to the site closest to you and the site furthest away. Watch the "speed-o-meter" needle. Does it go up smoothly or does it "surge". Does the little red ball move across the bottom smoothly or does it move and stick?
Is the speed at the far site faster than the speed as the close site?

Post back when you gett a chance. It may be a problem with the routers Verizon On Line has you connected to. A tweak on the MTU settings can help sometimes.

Thanks for the reply!

Most sites (west and east) give me the same speed except for my "recommended" server. That one (NY, NY) gives me by far the slowest download speed.

A bunch of sites also download start and stop (eg. the percentage complete will stick at 19% then jump to 35%, then stall, then jump to 50% then stall, etc).

Here are the results (descriptions) of a bunch of tests I just did:

NY, NY
------
D: Starts at 2000 for a split second, then immediately drops to 550 Kbps.
It will have a few instant-spikes where it jumps 50 - 100 Kbps but then it falls back down to 550 Kbps again.
U: Slowly raises from 0 (?) to 750 Kbps

Fredrick, MD
------------
D: Starts at 2000, quickly raises to 2800 Kbps and finishes with 1 second
U: Slowly raises from 0 (?) to 750 Kbps

Washington, DC
------------
D: (Same as MD)
U: (Same as MD)

Washington, DC (2nd)
------------
D: Started at 2000, then dropped to 500 and slowly climbed back to 2400 Kbps.
U: Same.

Washington, DC (3rd)
------------
D: Started at 2500 Kbps and stayed there.
U: Same.

San Franciso, CA
------------
D: Started at 0 and then went to 500, then spiked +50-100, then dropped, then spiked, then dropped.
U: Same.

San Jose, CA
------------
D: Started at 1500 and steadily (but rapidly) increased to 2800 Kbps
U: Same.

San Jose, CA (2nd)
------------------
D: Same as 1st run but stopped halfway through for a second
U: Same.

Do all th tests take about 10 seconds to run? or do some start and finish in a second or two?
Are you using this link to test? It is direct to speakeasy:

Reason I ask is I do not see a Frederic MD test site on Speakeasy?

And Welcome to Dslreports!

Oops! For some reason I thought Speakeasy's speedtest was located at speedtest.net, sorry!

I've re-tested using the tests on the site you linked to and the upload speed gradually increases from 0 to 700+ on every single location and seems to take the same amount of time to finish. (the red ball moves very, very smooth)

The downloads seem to vary greatly, but the west coast servers seem to be much smoother. They might of got stuck for a split-second but then they continued on.

New York was by far the worst (it kept sticking and then jumping forward) and Chicago was a little better but pretty much the same thing.

Washington seemed very inconsistent and would usually be smooth 2500+ Kbps but would also only give me 500 Kbps and stick and a lot.

It seems like most of the east coast servers were sticking a lot. It was either a smooth fast speed, or a very slow sticking speed. (there wasn't any smooth but slow speeds)

Does that help?

I really appriciate you helping me out! Please give me good news Doctor!

Download DrTCP from the tools section. Open it, select your NIC, set an RWIN of 13068, Save, and reboot.

Now, with that setting, you will get stable speeds for all servers, however, speeds will decrease the further you get from your location. You can expect 2500-2800 for NY, DC, and ATL, 2000-2200 for CHI, 1600-1800 for DAL, and 800-1100 for the West Coast. It's due to Verizon's use of Juniper routers, which have this quirky issue for some reason.

If you use a higher RWIN, you will get fast and stable speeds to sites and servers farther away, but you will get the slow and unstable speeds to sites closer to you (less than 40ms pings).

Thanks for the help!!

Does this work with Vista 32-bit? It only says 2000/XP so I'd like to make sure first before it does anything harmful.

Also, do I need to tweak my MTU (on the router and/or the PC)?

[EDIT] DARN! Apparantly Vista has a "self-adjusting" RWIN?

Here's a quote I found from searching: "No tweaking utility will work with Vista. Vista will choose it's own Rwin."

Anything else I can do?

Your running Vista? Then no, you are screwed. Vista is auto-tuning, and doesn't use RWIN at all. I was really hoping that one benefit to Vista might be that it would solve this incompatibility with the Junipers, but I guess that's not the case. If you can't deal with the speeds as they are, I'm pretty sure you can get the to waive the termination fee since it's their equipment being incompatible that's causing the problem.

Ahhh... another plus for Vista!

Can I adjust my MTU (router or PC) to help out at all or is that something completely different and won't help?

There is a registry entry for MTU, but I don't know it. You can find it over in the Broadband Tweaks forum, possibly even in their FAQ. It may help your overall performance a bit, but won't have a huge affect on what you are seeing. You really can't blame Vista here. The process I gave wasn't a cure, but merely a band-aid. This is really a problem with Juniper's routers. The older Redbacks did not have this problem.

sofakng,
Many of us have suffered with this issue on the Juniper routers (and many more are suffering and don't realize it). I would suggest that you open a ticket on the Verizon direct forum about this "surging speed".
They probably can not help you get moved to a Redback router but the router folks at VOL need to get this crap fixed. It has been going on for over 19 months that I am aware of and NO fix yet.
Feel free to use my name and try to direct the ticket to VZMichael. We have worked this problem for a long time on one of my DSL lines.
VOL needs to get this fixed and it will only happen when enough people let then know they are not happy.

How do you know if you are on one of these Juniper routers (of if your "signal" passes through one on the way to wherever)?

Only Verizon Knows for sure .. but if you see surging speeds and the most distance speed test sites are faster than the close ones, there is a pretty good chance you are on a Juniper.
In my case, I was involved with enough VOL people that they finally confirmed to me the Juniper issue.

I'll do that. What's your name so I can reference you? (Tim Pende?)

VZ_MichelK knows me as pendetim. Just mention the redback jumiper issue and that should trigger it.

Ok, do you mean VZ_MichaelK? Do you happen to have a trouble ticket number I can reference or anything?

I'm about to shoot an e-mail to Verizon technical support (the online chat and voice support was absolutely useless) and I'd like to include as much information as possible.

Thanks again for all of your help, I really appriciate it!

EDIT: Darn. I can't even find a way to e-mail them. Do you happen to have an e-mail address I can contact?

No I do not have a trouble ticket #.

Yes it is VZ_MichelK. Just put his name in the header and Juniper troubles. That will get his attention. Fell free also to mention me. I am pretty sure he remembers, we worked on this for a long time.
Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

Tim

Don't bother with an email. It won't get you far. Start a thread here: »/forum/vzdirect You can reference this thread, as well as pende_tim See Profile's and my own problems with this. Both of us have dealt with MichelK See Profile.

Jodokast96,
Unless things have changed the VZdirect staff are not allowed to look at the rest of BBR. They are kept in their "walled garden" on the direct forum. Referencing this thread will not hurt, but it probable wont do any good either.

I wonder how many other VOL customers are having this problem and don't know it? If they would realize it and complain, maybe Verizon would fix it. Sheesh.. it's been since Feb of 2006 since I was moved from the redback to the juniper and Verizon still has not addressd the problem with junipers.

Was never aware of that. Never got any hint of that from what dealings I've had with them. Well, he can still take any and all info from here and use it as needed, and mention that it is something that is going on elsewhere (just in case they somehow forgot about it, lol). This has been going on since Nov. of '05 for me. Funny thing is my neighbor across the street has the same plan, yet is still on a Redback. But hey, you know all about that don't ya? The real disappointment with this is that the auto-tuning feature's of Vista do not correct this. I was really hoping that just maybe these routers were designed to take advantage of that coming feature, and that Verizon actually did a smart thing by using them. Someone must have drugged me to have had a thought like that.
