Vonage Talk

If you are a Vonage user then you should download Vonage Talk!
»alpha.vonage.com/

You can make calls to any number within North America using your computer. These calls do not count against your outgoing minutes, so if you are on the limited plan this is great.

I use this while traveling, I just need an internet connection.

This is what I read from their website
"Vonage Talk is included at no extra charge and calls made using this feature enjoy the same great rates as your other Vonage calls."

I use their softphone which has 500 included. The above says same great rates for VG calls. So what exactly would you pay to use the service?

you pay nothing if you are a vonage user. You just can't receive calls with vonage talk.

Vonage Talk is still VERY buggy. I will be keeping my softphone to go with my 2 regular lines for the time being. Unless they make some change to this before release it is Windows only. I spend about 60% of my time in Mac OSX and Linux so it might be a dead duck for me either wayd.

So, question is... can we extract the SIP info we need out of Vonage Talk (which by the way works great outbound to the US and Canada) to put in a softphone?

I'd love to use SJphone on my Axim PPC with Vonage without adding a softphone account...

For an alpha 0.9 version, it works very nice.

Well that is interesting. So after trying for a day I noticed that on my outbound calls it reports the caller ID of my Von line. I don't understand the real use to this vs the my Softphone. The audio differently doesn't sound as good.
But then again its still beta. If they release it and fix the
inbound calling then would it replace the softphone we have now?

Exactly why it's free as opposed to the Softphone $10 a month line (which DOES include the SIP info). The Vonage Talk product is PC ONLY, and OUTBOUND only -- no inbound whatsoever. Actually, that's not true -- you CAN receive calls from other Vonage customers that ALSO are using the Vonage Talk program. You can also text chat with literally ANY chatting program as well (AOL, Google, Yahoo etc etc). You can also check your voicemail with the program. The version is 0.9 which is the ALPHA version, however, I found sound quality crisp and clear on my XP PC.

If you don't need to receive calls on the road from non-Vonage Talk users, and want to save $$ while traveling with your PC, this free program is certainly the way to go...

I have tried vonage talk and have noticed that it doesn't put an entry in my call activity. So I assume the calls are free, however when looking at the Vonage Talk Page it says this...

...and calls made using this feature enjoy the same great rates as your other Vonage calls.
I assume this means once it is out of Alpha/Beta they will start deducting your minutes if you are not on the unlimited plan. Anyone hear anything different

I haven't heard anything about them charging extra for it. I have a free incoming number with freedigits.com and it also includes a soft phone application. I use my Vonage Talk to call out and free digits to receive calls, I use this while traveling in Europe.

I think the sound quality is great.

Ross Craig -- excellent setup -- however, instead of the out of town Freedigits number, you may be able to get a local FREE number (wherever you live) from GrandCentral. I have a local free 404 (ATL) number with them, and forward it to Gizmo for free inbound and as you said, Vonage Talk for free outbound.

I was using your setup prior to getting a local inbound free number from Grandcentral.

Grand Central and Gizmo project

I also have Grand Central, but I can't get a number for Canada so I just use the one from freedigits. I also have the Gizmo Project, but never use it.

Best of all, Vonage Talk is included at no extra charge and calls made using this feature enjoy the same great rates as your other Vonage calls.

Seems it will be a free feature.

It seems to be just some new type of IM where you can call people.
