No way!

I don't buy that for a second. While I wholeheartedly agree that they have every right to throttle traffic and cut bandwidth hogs loose, I have to say that denying they shape traffic is an outright lie. This is probably just a case of slimy sales / marketing people (such a disgusting yet necessary evil) not knowing anything technical about the product they are pimping.

Comcast selectively shapes traffic. Don't buy into their lies.

Following that logic, we are suppose to believe Comcast because they say so ?

Comcast can distort/omit facts/lie just as easily as any one else.

If you read their statement, it is VERY carefully worded...

"The company doesn't actively look at the applications or content that its customers download over the network."

They might not ACTIVELY look at applications and content, but they can passively look at it via automated mechanisms and block/disrupt/degrade traffic.

I have less problem believing Comcast than postings on a bulletin board.

Good point...

At the same time though, Comcast has a financial incentive in distorting the facts to their advantage. Logic dictates that neither be trusted - a bulletin board or Comcast - and that you read each one's statements with a planet-sized helping of skepticism.

Sure.

Or if you work in the industry, you're liable to know that it's extremely rare for any ISP not to shape traffic these days. I'm not saying there aren't any out there that don't shape, but I would be willing to wager that at least 95% of all modern broadband services employ some form of bandwidth management now. The exceptions would be ISP's that charge a premium for unhindered bandwidth, ISP's that are mismanaged and will be out of business soon, or ISP's with plenty of available network bandwidth to spare.

Think of it this way: Verizon, with their GPON FiOS product, are able to distribute over 2 Gbps shared downstream to as many as 32 customers (or at least that how my company's GPON service works -- they may have optical splitters cable of more than 32 ONT's). They can afford to offer unhindered service because they are selling tiers that doesn't really put any strain on their infrastructure. On the other hand, Comcast is running a DOCSIS 1.1 / 2.0 network, with a maximum useable throughput of 38 Mbps downstream which is distributed to up to 500 customers. Unlike Verizon, they cannot afford to not employ bandwidth management because it would take only four out of those 500 customers to completely saturate a node with torrent traffic (assuming 10 Mbps Comcast service, and 10 Mbps torrent download speed).

Make sense, Hob?

Well, let's put that to the test, Hob.

I'm here. I'm qualified. I've published everything, warts and all. I use my real name.

I'm telling you, based on my tests and their results -- all published here for the examination and re-testing by anyone who wants to try -- that Comcast is interfering with peer connections.

Do you believe me or the Comcast PR guy?

I have actually seen the opposite. They are getting away from managing bandwidth , and these are very high profile companies.

They are even removing proxies , because they are killing themselves when a clients page changes so quickly. The only management that is being implemented in all the places I have contracted to are SPI firewalls and plenty of them.

The new fad is to let the bandwidth go where ever it has to and just inspect it for damaging software , malware , spam and security threats and or violations. Companies are starting to realize that their workers rely on the internet for a majority of their work.

I don't doubt you and I really don't want to be argumentative, so I'll just say that what you've seen contradicts my own experiences and I'll leave it at that.

Not trying to be argumentative either , but these folks are really realizing even one lost customer due to dissatisfaction is hurting them in the public eye.

It's a shame most companies like comcast don't feel the same way yet. Although I suppose the companies I have been are working with million dollar contracts and a couple make a dent in stock prices. Don't think 10k users dent comcast.
