ST516v6-1 is FW v6.2.16.3.0 (ZZQ0DV6.2G3)
ST516v6-2 is FW v6.2.29.2.0 (ZZQ0GE6.2T2)

ST516v6-1 has linear power supply
ST516v6-2 has switched-mode power supply

Last night, slightly past midnight, i put on-line
what i presume to be Thomson's newer ST516v6 unit
and its alledged corresponding switched-mode PSU.

I brought the linear-mode PSU and its counterpart
with me when i travelled between Louiseville and
my new appartment, there was very little time to
try the set previously labelled as "ST516v6-1"...

Static numbers provide poor information sometimes,
perhaps that's what happened with the 'DMT'/'STMT'
captures made after i returned to Louiseville: it
doesn't plead in favour of the new "ST516v6-2" set
and, yes, i did implement RF choking on the power
leads (i used two toroidal cores with five turns
each, actually)... The WAN side's heavy RF choke
has been replaced with multiple lighter cores to
distribute their effect (i noticed that the line
improved, probably because of the season alone;
hence, there may be little or no need for those).

I scavenge ferrite cores from obsolete PSUs so the
operating frequency of those devices is many times
60 Hz, ideally within the A.M. radio range which
DSL shares... I could swap the MoDems vs the PSUs
but there's not much time left as my departure for
Quebec city is imminent, if all goes well i should
have moved permanently next week. As a consequence,
i prioritize my evaluation of those two device by
collecting long term records, 'STMT' curves, ideally.

FirmWare v7.4.3.2 combined to my ST546v6 suddently
inspired respect, as far as i'm concerned. If it
weren't for the fear that i might never be able to
find the exact FirmWares for later re-installation,
euh... i'd sure give FW v7.4.3.2 a thought or two!

Look at my static numbers and conclude for yourself:
this 8 dB DownStream SNR Margin which i could see
at the end of the day felt inferior, miserable!...

An error of interpretation is possible but i was
under the impression that the initial goal should
be to compare the units as they are shipped, then
to dig up a bit further, eventually... Right now,
it wouldn't be normal for me to flash the devices
without a strong motive: it's not what a regular
customer should do only a couple days after he's
received his brand new MoDem, in my opinion! In
any case, please feel welcomed to comment further.

I would expect the switchmode PSU to be somewhat noisy, but the SNR difference looks quite dramatic. Did you have any of your patented ;) thoroids on the switchmode PSU? I'm not sure if thoroids are good for anything other than 60Hz suppression, but still...

You are testing the 2 modems with slightly different firmware versions, could this make a difference, too? Is there a way to re-test with one modem & different PSUs?

My ST516 came with v6.2.16.3 and I was just thinking of upgrading to v7.4.3. Would you recommend it? You seem to have tested all firmware releases, I wonder if there's a reason why you're running v6.2.16.3. 1st of all, we've got a sunny day with dark
clouds at the end of the afternoon. 'STMT'
doesn't update the statics numbers while it
is drawing curves, which means that in this
test the MoDems did not have time to settle
before those numbers were recorded (nor did
my spectral response curves adjust neither).

The main purpose of today's 'STMT' captures
was to obtain "noise" curves to compare the
two MoDems, essentially. Consider the rest
as accessorial, other attempts will be made.

It can be difficult to engage in long term (24 h) tests
during summer when it seems we can't have at least
two consecutive days without rain and the lightning
which comes with it that contaminates the statistics.

The need to leave 'STMT' running day and night to
gather statistical data from the SpeedTouch doesn't
help it neither but i managed to put one record aside.

The Downstream SNR Margin is very stable and varies
between 12.5 and 17.5 dB while my SpeedStream makes
this more like 5 to 13 dB only. The RCOs are great with
the new SpeedTouch FirmWare as well but i'm not too
sure that those two products can really be compared
on the basis of their SNR margins and RCOs so i'll try
to collect some Error Rate information and i wouln't be
surprized if the SpeedTouch 5x6 comes close or even
beats the SpeedStream 4200, thanks to its FirmWare!

The downside of Thomson's v7.4.3.2.0-AA FirmWare
is that i can't trust 'DMT' any longer because when
i start it there's no way to tell if the MoDem will reboot
or not... I believe they made it 'DMT' hostile but this
pattern seems to occur at random so far and i haven't
read similar reports from the other ST5x6 owners yet.

My impression is that Thomson's philosophy
may be: "don't fix it if it's not broken" or, in
other terms, "we made it work so you need
no 3rd-party trouble-shooting tool anyway".

Or, if you prefer: "plug it and simply leave it
alone". Judging from what i observed so far,
'DMT' is probably detected by the FirmWare
which Thomson must have programmed to
reset at random when it sees the "signature"
of this particular application, as it attempts
to connect via TelNet. I wonder if 'STMT' &
'OrbMT' wouldn't happen to have a different
TelNet script timing... Hummm... But i have
better things to do (evaluate my SS4200 if
the rain and storms are over, for example)...

The other ST5x6 users will have to find out
about v7.4.3.2.0 ('ZZQ0AA7.432') on their
own, eventually, and i bet we'll hear of it in
future posts if the boogy trap strikes again.

I'm running the same version of DMT. I just checked my stats and have now been running for 1 day, 13 hours so it's just a matter of time before another reset. In my case when it resets I see the modem itself resetting and not caused by DMT.

Many moons ago i monitored my SpeedTouch statistics
by taking a couple captures a day for a week and it
allowed me to catch a faulty counter reset. It may
be a new FirmWare but i don't trust the SpeedTouch
counters: after 25 hours 19 minutes 6 seconds all
of the counters were still equal to zero except for
"Receive FEC" which was unrealistically low... It's
the reason why i compared only the spectral response
curves or the figures from Bell's Line-Test portal.

Right now i have no suitable tool to collect samples
(96 a day) which would let me detect counter resets
and/or other signs of disruption. I can appreciate
the response envelope's shape but that's about it...

My situations isn't as severe as yours but it makes
me think that perhaps i should ask to be switched to
5056/800 Kbps FastPath in order to stress the MoDems
sufficiently (Interleave mode can be too forgiving
for the purpose of comparing DSL MoDems, after all)!

Evidently, 6016/800 Kbps FastPath should work even

and fds posted ST captures showing a notch at 580 KHz,

Here are my comments after a one week evaluation of the
GNet GBB2060-Xi. For starters, lets say that i couldn't but
notice the attenuation levels which are more like those of
other devices i've tried before, compared to those of my
BB0060B. Distance once seemed to be between 3.3 KM &
3.7 KM, depending on where the readings came from; the
Google Maps site makes that about 1.8 KM to 2.3 KM only!

Lesson #1, this demonstrates that other losses present
on the line may very well happen to raise the estimated
distance. My service went from stable @ 3 Mbps FastPath
to unstable at 4 Mbps FastPath to stable again at 6 Mbps
InterLeaved throughout the years. In simple terms, back
in mid-2005 (when i 1st subscribed to DSL), any attempt
to predict the attainable profile based solely on static
numbers would have been like fortune telling, gambling,
guessing, etc... SNR Margin and Attenuation numbers are
useful but this is rudimentary trouble-shooting at best;
such information fails to tell the whole story and it's even
capable of creating mirages. It certainly doesn't account
for the remedies accessible to a customer (like centralized
filtering, shielding, RFI choking and device tweaking)...

For this reason, i'm insisting over obtaining 24 h CRC Error
curves as often as i can because, in the end, non-corrupted
data is free of retransmissions which in turn would be the
cause of problems such as slow-downs, disconnections, etc.

Luckily, right now, my CRC Error "noise" curves are as flat
as a mirror. Fingers crossed...

Lesson #2: this newer GNet unit feels hotter to the touch
than my GNet BB0060B or even my Thomson SpeedTouch 546!

Most fortunately, i was aware of the possibility that heat
could turn out to be an issue some day so i installed two
fans where the MoDem sits, a long time ago: one below and
one in front of it.

The fact that you get a paradoxal result using centralized
filtering might be an indication that it may not be be as
centralized as it appears. A couple years ago i had bizare
readings which told me the MoDem was doing better when it
was away from Bell's demarcation point than close to it...

In the end, i found out there was a tap hidden from my view
and that's when i switched to a fully centralized filtering
configuration. It's difficult to get a good picture of what
is going on using short term statistics, it's possible the
new wiring path is catching more A.M. interference, etc.

Right now i'm thinking you'd be better with a 512 Kbps U/S
signal, that's why i like the look of ANSI T1.413 on 'STMT';
the later has never been proven to actually correspond to
reality, though. Euh... But i had to mention it...

I'm encouraged so far. I would like to kick my DMT habit and just let the modem sync at top speed instead of constantly tweaking the modem options. When I just turned off the modem options on the ST516 it jumped to 2496 w/ 6db SNRM. Not so good. I just briefly tried my 2-wire; it synched at 2496 12dB SNRM. I would be very happy to leave it at that, but it has a problem with every http access taking a very long time; even when I'm just looking at its own internal pages. Very strange. I'm thinking of either using the 2-wire in bridge mode to see if the http works better - or maybe loading a V7 firmware into the ST516 which is supposed to be as good as the 2-wire if I understand what I read here.

Oh, and putting a DSL/Phone splitter outside at the NID actually seemed to slightly decrease the speed & SNRM. Go figure!

Perhaps you would have to reduce the resolution somewhat,
this is what i obtain using only 1024x768 (Enhanced VGA)...

Those captures had to be made from Windows, actually, and
then i converted the .PNG files into .GIFs using 'XnView'
(to make them lighter). As for 24 h CRC Error Rate records,
i'm afraid this is a feature specific to the GNet BB0060B
and possibly a few other EA130 clones or equivalent. I've
managed to convince the author of 'STMT' to support such
curves using the SpeedTouch 5x6 (which is amnesic and can
also be found to reset its counters, on top of that) but
it must run continuously to collect such a curve. Guys
like me only need to click "Screenshot (.png)" once a day.

Not that contradictory when you think about it: the choke filters out some frequencies, so while the modem is training, it does not allocate bits to these buckets. The result is: less buckets, more bits per bucket, less SN ratio:

Without choke: 193 buckets are used (tones)
With choke: 214

Also, look at the number of bits per tone with and without the choke.

The logic is:

1- Find how many bits I can put in each bucket with SNR>=6
2- Use the better buckets (highest SNR), with the least amount of bits per bucket to support the required BW.

So, you most likely have less errors with the choke because you are removing the tones that are more susceptible to errors (and this is specific to your line). installed toroïdal cores and got switched to 6016/
512 Kbps Interleaved. The top 2 weeks records can
speak for itself, the 2 hours one below provides a
clue as to what happens with no toroïdal chokes on
the phone line input - this record also speaks for
itself, it's demonstrating that sometimes we can't
just trust spectral response curves: the nice one
has the worst CRC Error count in this very case!!!

I didn't climb up there, most unfortunately!  If i
had, no one would wonder about the tape nor what's
hidden behind because it would be long gone as i'd

an edge of the alluminium cladding and yet it does

example, we had the roof worked on this summer and

the tape itself and more specifically what it does
not allow us to see.  My pictures provide evidence
that this tape may now behave more like a compound
of tissue with tar spots than a real insulator, if
there happens to be a splice underneath then we're
talking about a cell where the growth of dendrites
and whiskers could end up being actually promoted!

The major disruption episodes which "hammer pulse-
dialing" can cure temporarily are far from being a
frequent event, that part of my triple-personality
line resurfaces only a few times a year and i have
little hope that Bell would get here right in time
to catch it in action since they don't even return
calls...  How can one explain this to them anyway?

While you work in hope to collect 24 noise graphs,
i'd like to mention two easy tricks since you made
me recall of them after you described intermittent
(bursty) problems occuring on your line.  The most
simple one helps to diagnose the eventual build-up
of a high-impedance short-circuit due to insulator
issues leading to electrolytic migrations...  What
you need to do is to "hammer pulse-dial" two dozen
times!!!  I discovered this method years ago while
i lived in Montreal and then i used it a few times
again, where i live now.  I wrote about it before:

to use the "flash" button and finally i discovered
the "hammer pulse-dial" fix (dial "9" repeatedly).

That was it!  I knew something was wrong so it was
not long before i verified my long forgotten cable
which had been hardened and punctured by the heat!

Here in Louiseville i failed to find a compromized
insulation on my side of the demarcation point but
i could locate a questionable feature on the roof:

I'm not sure how this trick worked but i'd say the
successive dialing pulses depolarized the chemical
compound which formed at exposed locations: there
is a train of pulses between about 12 Volts and 48
Volts D.C. when someone "hammer pulse-dials", that
is one theory but the effects were reproducible so
if it works then my advice is to check the wiring.

Your gnet numbers are similar to what I get currently, so when I get a modem that shows me stats both ways, I would like to see what I get, cause I don't feel my potential will be the same as yours currently.

*my connection is fine for a long period of time (upto about 24hrs) and then it just crc errors about 300 times faster then I can refresh the stats. --happens for a duration of a few seconds, then its fine for many many hours again. I've tried eleven FirmWares with the SpeedTouch so
far, it's unclear which is best for me but i shown
that shielding does have a positive effect, in any
case.  All that matters is to use galvanized iron:
it's para-magnetic and the coating eases soldering
a lot.  I use massive iron tubing too but i hardly
recommend it unless the craftwork is no problem...

Slotted sleeves as these can do the job just fine:

Ferro-Magnetic Metal Sleeves

The shields will work if they're grounded properly
(hence the need to solder).  Of course, i guess it
is evident for most of us that the close proximity
to AC power lines means caution must be mandatory!

A couple 24 error rate records will be required if
you need to evaluate the noise sources relative to
domestic activity, instantaneous spectral response
curves are practically useless for this task.  I'd
suggest you focus on your SpeedStream 5200 and try
to make 'DMT v9.x' work with it, should the SS4200
happen to be close enough that means 'DMT can work
with it but i'd appreciate too see some proof over
this...  The SS6520 and the 3Com USR-9108 are even
less documented relatively to 'DMT', i'm afraid...

If there's room for tweaking in your own situation
then my advice is to play with the 3Com since that
device does support BandWidth Shaping extensively:
on a tone-per-tone basis, on top of that.  Maybe a
genuine SpeedStream can do as much using 'DMT' but
it remains to be seen.  Feel free to be a pioneer!

I can't do much about the outside (underground)

Moving Bell's main line away from power lines just
didn't seem to do much and i think i've found why:

The white part is PVC, no magnet will stick to it.

Plan-B was to shield Bell's main line, i've got no
