| How To Prepare For FIOS
Hi, my sister is getting FIOS internet this Wednesday and wants me to be there when the Verizon tech shows up. I am wondering if there is anything we need to do to her computer to get it ready before the technician comes? For example should we clear out a lot of old software and make more disk space on her hard drive? Should we run a full virus check and spyware check to make sure there is nothing that might interfere with her connectivity speeds? Any suggestions from you folks would be most appreciated. |

| There is no required software for FiOS service. As long as her computer has a functioning network card and is running xp or newer, then it'll be fine.
If you really want to prepare, you'll make sure that there are clear paths for the technician to install the equipment. make sure any wall space inside (garage/basement) opposite of where the fiber will be placed is clear. if there's not an a/c outlet there, make sure there is a path from that spot to the closest outlet.
aside from that, the tech will figure it out. |

Also, what is it about Win98 or Win Me that would prevent it from working on FiOS? If memory serves me correctly they both had fully functional TCP/IP stacks. In fact, my last Windows machine ran Win Me before I upgraded it to XP and before the upgrade I had it connected to an ISP that provided 10mbps/1mbps bandwidth - very similar to FiOS's lower tier services (and I'm sure that the machine would have performed equally well at 20 or 30 mbps too).
Sorry to be teeing off on those two points, but I'm reading this the day after hearing the FiOS rep state that the service would only work with Windows and Macintosh machines. Don't they tell their reps that the service works with other OS's at ALL? Sheesh! |

This is the way all ISPs should be. Give the user a length of ethernet and let them loose - no mandatory install CDs that rebrand everything on your system, no fuss.
In response to the OP: You should be doing most of those things anyway. There is the possibility that you may need to fiddle with the RWIN settings to obtain the maximum provisioned speeds. -- # /sbin/reboot |

It will work, Vz just doesn't want the headache since most of the machines w/Me and 98 lack sufficient hardware, current drivers, etc. to remain fully functional. I'm talking out of the box, never been touched machine, not a custom. |
