| reply to BLUNTED 1 Re: [OOL] BOOST is double plus good! (In Orwellian Newspeak)
said by BLUNTED 1 :Sorry to burst your bubble Dave but OOL sucks bad here and they are doing everything wrong. I have the reverse side of what you are getting. Even my upload hardly break 3.5 to 4 mb alot of the time so they just SUCK !!!!!! I have no respect for OOL they are horrible You aren't.. I know as with all things, YMMV. It works out for me, and I'm happy. It may not work out for the next guy. I'm just pointing out that as far as here on the Island, it's very stable and consistent; please don't take offense at it as I'm not trying to one up anyone or show I'm better than anyone else.
I'm simply lucky to get nice speeds. As I can see from the forums, I'm really not the only one, but I don't doubt there are plenty of people who still suffer with sub-par speeds, yourself included.
I wish I could do something to help.. But unfortunately, that's not in my omnipotency contract
Good luck, and I do hope you find a provider that works FOR YOU and makes you happy bro.. That's all that's important.
Peace -- Regards, Dave

This came down so fast I nearly missed taking the screen shot.
Not an altered screen shot. Browser cache cleared, first download of this file. (Halo Trial) -- Ken |

| reply to kdshapiro No.. It doesn't seem unbelievable. And Yes, the picture does lie. It's physically and technically impossible to get 13MB/sec over the cable modem.
As already pointed out in another thread, the max speed a single Boost modem cant get is around 40Mbps. This is due to network limits of DOCSIS 2.0. Not even to mention the limit of Ethernet (10/100) which is around 12MB/sec. |

1 edit | reply to kdshapiro Could be... You ARE Downloading that file from a Microsoft Server, after all... Perhaps MS is using some sort of "Compression" scheme that's also native to the Vista OS, and you are seeing the "Effective" D/L speed (vs. the ACTUAL "Bit-for-Bit" speed of the connection)...?
Can you achieve similar results when downloading a large file from a NON-MS Server, that has a BIG Bandwidth "Pipe"? (ex: a Linux ISO Distribution from »www.madtux.org )?
It would be an interesting experiment, none the less...

| I think even that is a stretch... Nothing could compress a presumably already compressed file that much. That would be (at OOL's max speed of about 38Mbps) compressing the 131MB file to 46.4MB. That's a compression of 35.4% of an already compressed file. That would be the biggest feature in Vista if it were actually true |

StreetSpirit Premium join:2002-08-13 Roslyn, NY | reply to kdshapiro Vista is wrong. Very simple.
The downstream cable interface is only 43mbps. After overhead, our usable bandwidth is about 38mbps downstream on Docsis 2.0

1 edit | reply to StreetSpirit Good Morning. Vista may be wrong, but my stopwatch and filesize don't lie.
131 meg file downloaded in 10 seconds. You do the math. I don't care if it's compression, burst rates, magic or caching. When files are downloaded from large pipes, the transfer moves like a waterfall. -- Ken |

I showed you the math and how it's impossible. And you should care if it's "caching" cause that would mean it's not coming from your "large pipe" at all.
There's absolutely no way to get 13MB/sec over OOL.

He's not going to let a little thing like common sense get in the way of his argument! |

Obviously DL speeds are only good as the other persons upload, these results can be achieved without boost. |
