4 edits | reply to zteardrop Does it take long to install? This thing has been installing for 2 1/2 hours already. I do have alot of files on my hard drive. Is it running a scan before the installation? If so, I probably should have unchecked that option.
I'm thinking of killing this install and reinstall again and carefully uncheck what it is going to do during the install.
Can use some advice.
Thanks.
BK
EDIT: I decided to kill it. Hopefully I can still do the install. |

If you still have it running, go to %temp% folder/directory and look for the logs with the latest dates. Maybe they will tell you why its installer got stuck. | reply to zteardrop Well, what an unpleasant experience. I should have listed to the veterans instead of Symantec. A poster said I should uninstall NIS 2007 first, and I didn't. I figured that Symantec's e-mail made no mention of that, so I installed NIS 2008 over NIS 2007. Bad move. The poster said that this way of installing it was not recommended.
OK, now let me tell you what I did wrong. I killed the install via task manager. After I did that, I rebooted and boom, no internet connection! Had to do a system restore to get the internet connection back. Thank goodness that went well. After that, I used the Norton removal tool. That went fine. I rebooted and then installed NIS 2008 fresh. That took all but 5 minutes, maybe less. No issues there.
The lesson learned here: listen, listen, listen and follow, follow, follow the DSL Reports veteran's opinions.
I wanted to post this to warn anyone else. By the way, I am running Windows Vista Ultimate.
Well, I had a fun lesson anyway.
Thank you for your advice, which i hope to follow much better in the future.

Do I need to remove NIS2007 and then install NIS2008 after I download it? Do I need to run the removal tool if I do have to remove NIS2007? |

BEFORE installing NIS 2008 remove NIS2007 in full via add-remove and any other Symantec products listed BEFORE using the Norton Removal Tool. In the past several days Symantec/Norton released an updated version of the Removal tool.
Use this link »solutions.symantec.com/sdccommon···103157EN and locate the version of the product you need to un-install and follow the instructions.
The updated Norton Removal Tool has definitely improved the removal process. I only located one folder that remained and only 1 key under Symantec in the registry that needed to be removed manually. The folder that needed to be deleted was in Program Files/ Common Files/Symantec that only had one subfolder that remained and the Symantec key in the registry was the key holding the product key data.
I upgraded to NIS2008 by downloading the 15 day trial version and using the key from NIS2007 that I saved prior to the uninstall. I also downloaded the add-on pack for 2008 and installed after the reboot after 2008 install was completed.
I had no problems whatsoever. Quick and painless. -- DSLR Phishtracker |

| reply to zteardrop Just my 3 cents. On a P3, P4 and Core2 duo machines previously running NAV 2007, manual LiveUpdates with NAV 2008 are much slower compared to 2007 version. This is very noticable. The P3 machine has also has gotten more laggy as well, and CPU usage spikes more during scans. Some new processes added as well.
Symantec has removed a few user choices and added some as well in the options settings.
Not so sure of the usefullness of the network map... fluff or not?
For me, the jury is still out... 2007 vs 2008? |

| reply to zteardrop Do I uninstall LiveUpdate as well through add/remove programs?
So:
1) Remove NIS2007 through add/remove programs 2) Run new removal tool 3) Install NIS2008
What about LiveUPdate?
Would be nice if Symantec created a KB article for this. |

If so does anyone have the link to the download ? So far I can't find it.

@net.in | reply to bk9410 You can upgrade your Norton 2006 or 2007 product to 2008 absolutely free of cost. The only criteria is that you need to have an active subscription. |
|
  Unease
@veritas.com | That's correct. However, the other criteria is that you can upgrade only to the product type that you have installed. For example: NAV 07 to NAV 08 and NIS 07 to NIS 08. |

| reply to bk9410 The free upgrade is possible only with products starting from 2006 and onwards. If you ever try this with 2005 and older versions of Norton products, you will need to purchase the upgrade.
Here is an example.
NIS 2006 or NIS 2007 upgrade to NIS 2008 is free of cost.
NIS 2005 or NIS 2004 upgrade is not free of cost and you need to purchase an upgrade. |

@sify.net | reply to zteardrop Guys the 2008 product is available for free upgrade with existing 2007 subscription |

| reply to zteardrop Symantec seems to have dumbed down the 2008 versions... I used to be able to set how often in minutes it would check for updates in the 2007 versions, but this feature is apparently gone in 2008 verions. Am I wrong on this? And how often in minutes do the 2008 versions check in for updates? |

| reply to zteardrop I noticed this comment in the PC Mag review:
"NIS or NAV users with a current subscription will receive the updates automatically."
I take this to mean that my NIS 2007 will automatically be updated to NIS 2008. Does this sound correct? |

@poundhost.com
| reply to nunsuperior In the 2007 version when I selected to run LiveUpdate an Options selection appeared on the upper left side of the LiveUpdate screen (in Interactive Mode). This has been removed from the 2008 version. The only way to access the Options now is from Control Panel (classic view by the way).
And Interactive Mode does not work in the 2008 version even if it is selected. With Interactive Mode in 2007 versions you had the ability to see and select what you wanted to download. In the 2008 version with Interactive Mode selected, it acts as if it is in Express mode (where it is all automatic). |

And Interactive Mode does not work in the 2008 version even if it is selected. LiveUpdate in the 2008 products works the same way it did in previous versions, there is just one difference - when LiveUpdate is started from the NIS/NAV UI or the start menu shortcut found in the NIS/NAV program group a different executable is called which displays a new UI for LiveUpdate. To get the old behaviour back, create a shortcut to LUALL.EXE (found in the C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate folder, or where ever this may be installed on your system) and use this instead. |
