| [Software] AT&T DSL COUNTER STRIKE DOWN?????????
Ok I had satalite broadband and Counter Strike worked fine. DSL just recently became available on my street so I switched to get more bandwidth and lower bill. With that being said I have not been able to play counter strike source sense the switch. I have an idea that maybe my netopia modem is blocking the game from connecting to game servers. Does anyone have any other suggestions about potential problems or solutions? If it is the netopia modem how do i get in there and what do I change? Thanks in advance to any who respond!!!!! |

2 edits | What model Netopia do you have? I'm going to assume it's an AT&T Southeast/BellSouth model Netopia 2241N-006.
Do you have a router between you Netopia and your computer? I'm going to assume you do not.
Do you know that your Netopia modem is also a router? I'm going to assume not.
Do you know what TCP/UDP Ports need to be forwarded for your game to work? I'm going to assume not.
These are the TCP/UDP Router Ports that need to be Forwarded. I stole all the information between the dashes from some website. ------------------------------------------------------------ If you use a router to connect to the internet then you will need to make sure that you have not restricted the ports that Steam needs in order for you to play.
The following ports should be opened for Steam to use: UDP 1200 (used by the friends network) UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive TCP 27020 to 27039 inclusive
If you are running your own Dedicated Server or are operating a LAN center then you will need to open the following ports: TCP 27040 and 27041 UDP 27015 and 27020 TCP 27015
If you do not know how to open ports on your router, or just want more info then check out Portforward.com ------------------------------------------------------------
Click on the link below to go to portforward.com, this webpage is for the Netopia 2241N-VGx, the Web GUI is a little different but it's close enough, follow the directions except for the part about logging into your Netopia's Web GUI at 192.168.1.1 that address is incorrect for a Netopia 2241N-006 it should be 192.168.1.254. Make sure you follow the directions about setting your computer up for a static LAN IP address. While you are in the Netopia's Web GUI set your connection type to be "always on", enter "expert mode", click "configure", click "connection", change connection type to "always on", click "save changes". »portforward.com/english/routers/···rike.htm
I was going to post step by step instructions with screenshots for the Netopia 2241N-006, but I could not find that modem, I checked my log book and I have loaned that modem out, sorry. |

| reply to lookxxx2003 Ok I have a linksys router running a linux firewall that allows port forwarding for games. So do I need to forward the ports listed on both netopia modem and the linksys router? If so I know how to forward on linksys router but have no idea how to get into netopia to forward? Any ideas? Thanks again in advance to all replies!!!!! |

3 edits | If you are not having problems your Netopia is probably in Bridge Ethernet mode, or it might be in PPP pass-through mode which might cause some problems. The IP address to access your Netopia 2241N-006 or Netopia 2241N-VGx is 192.168.1.254. Your Netopia must be directly connected to your computer to access it.
Edit: Corrected statement that IP address for -VGx models is 192.168.1.1, the correct address is 192.168.1.254 for -VGx models, 192.168.1.1 is for -ENT model Netopias which are not made in the 2200 series. |

you need to check which router is doing the pppoe authentication first..
if your modem is set to passthru , and your pppoe auth is done with your wireless router then all the natting is done at the wireless routher.. which would be fine.
but if you have the modem doing the auth for pppoe + nat and then you have the wireless router as the dhcp + nat + dmz you will very likely be having double natting. |

| if he wants to do cascaded nat ( not sure why you would do that unless you don't wireless clients accessing your lan)
then he has a lot more work ahead of him as he will have to open ports on each router.. unless he turns of dmz and leaves a default server ip setup to the 2nd nat device..
either way I think cascading on a "gaming" setup is not the way to go. |

| Could be so (for gaming). In my case, the SBC supplied SpeedStream 4100 is my first NAT device. PPPoE on the modem, DHCP scope is one IP address. DHCP server issues 192.168.1.64 to the WAN port of a Netgear FVS114. That IP address is DMZ, and can't be changed, or locked down. Wireless is not a part of the game.
I have never tried online gaming, myself, through this rig; but, it is common enough through the old SBC region, and doesn't seem to hinder the gamers. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

The Netopia is also a router; if you place a router behind the Netopia, it should be in the Netopia DMZ. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

brandon Some truth included in this post. Premium join:2003-03-31 Hurley, MS | reply to lookxxx2003 The double-NAT setup, while useful at times for some purposes, almost assuredly is going to be more trouble than it's worth for this poster.
Put the Netopia in bridge mode and let the router handle PPPoE and DHCP and be done with it. |

1 edit | reply to lookxxx2003 lookxxx2003, Due to some confusion on my part I think I may have lead you from the correct path to setting up your Netopia modem and Linksys router and I'm sorry for that. I was going to reply back to your post again to help you and due to unforeseen circumstances I was not able to do that.
I have not been able to focus my mind very well today because my mother has been in bad health lately and was felling very poor today and I had to take her to the emergency room this evening and I just returned home at about 1:30AM. ------------------------------------------------------------ Here is what we need to do, we need to throw out everything that has been done so far and start from a clean sheet of paper.
To start off with we need to know exactly what hardware we are working with. ------------------------------------------------------------ Turn your Netopia modem upside down and look at the label.
What model Netopia modem do you have?
What firmware version is your Netopia modem running?
Is it a Netopia that was supplied by AT&T Southeast/BellSouth? ------------------------------------------------------------ Turn your Linksys wireless router over to the label side.
What model is your Linksys wireless router?
What version is your Linksys wireless router?
Is your Linksys wireless router running factory Linksys firmware?
If your Linksys wireless router is running factory Linksys firmware, what is it's firmware version?
Is your Linksys wireless router running aftermarket firmware?
If your Linksys wireless router is running aftermarket firmware, what type of aftermarket firmware is it running and what version is it? ------------------------------------------------------------
When you have provided me with accurate information about your hardware it will allow me to provide you with more accurate instructions about how to set it up.
This is basically what we are going to do, we are going to reset the Netopia and Linksys back to factory defaults, then we are going to update the firmware if not already at the current version, then we are going to reset the Netopia and the Linksys to factory defaults if we had to update the firmware, then we are going to set the Netopia to Bridge Ethernet mode, then we are going to set the Linksys to do the PPPoE authentication and all routing functions, then we are going to test and see that the gaming computer can properly access the Internet, then we are going to set the Linksys to forward the correct ports for your game to the IP address of your gaming computer, then we are going to set up your gaming computer for a static IP address or we are going to set the Linksys to always assign the same IP address to the MAC address of your gaming computer if your Linksys has that capability, then we are going to check to see if your gaming computer has a software firewall and make sure it is properly set up to allow your game to work, then we are going to tweak the gaming computer's Receive Window and Maximum Transmission Unit to match the level of FastAccess DSL that you have, then we are going to test the gaming computer and make sure your game works, then we are going to connect the rest of your computers and make sure that they can properly access the Internet, then we are going to tweak the Receive Window and Maximum Transmission Unit of the rest of your computers to match the level of FastAccess DSL that you have, then we are going to discuss wireless encryption options for your Linksys wireless router and your wireless computers and set them however you want them, then you are going to play Counter Strike and I'm going to eat a sandwich and take a nap.
I'm only willing to provide the above help over the phone, if you want to do that I can IM your DSLReports account with my personal AT&T/Cingular phone number, if you don't want me to have your phone number block your caller ID information before you call, if you are going to call me from a cell phone or a wireless home phone make sure the battery is fully charged before you call and make sure that you have good reception in the rooms that your modem, router, and computers are in before you call. Be sure that you write down my telephone number before you call in case that we lose connection and you need to call back and your Internet access is in a state were you can not retrieve my telephone number from your DSLReports account. If you do not want to run up time on your cell phone or long distance on your home phone you can call me and I will call you back, I have over 5000 unused rollover minutes on my cell phone.
The reason why I'm only willing to provide the above level of help over the phone is because I believe it was due to my confusion that you were not able to fix your problem yesterday and also because I can think and talk much faster and better than I can think and type.
If you don't want to talk over the phone I will post you some screenshots that will help you set your modem to Bridge Ethernet mode and you can take it from there, if you need any additional help reply back to your post and I will help you. ------------------------------------------------------------ I was going to post this last night but I fell asleep in my chair before I had a chance and I see that FAQFixer has provided you with some help. If you need any additional help I will still help you over the phone or through this thread as described above.
Sorry for all of your trouble, Airwolf7 |
