When you think about it - and I'm sure it was hard work - to me, it seems a lot less work than I'd expect. Maybe, natedj, you just make it look easy?

- Very cute. When I saw you first rolling on the paint; I'd agree. But then, with the border up, it actually looks super. My guess is that a contractor would charge $12k - $15k for something like this.
The only things that may be missing, is an exhaust fan and a light over the tub. (Can't tell from the photos.) Not having an exhaust fan, could result in the border peeling earlier than expected. |

| reply to natedj Awesome job! That's a heck of a "first project to tackle!
Our house was built in the late 60's and our bathroom has the same small tiles on the floor. Were those easy to remove? Based on the pics, you just used a flat shovel? Did they pop right off? -- Legal ATVing in Connecticut? |

| reply to natedj What is the brand of the Tub enamel that you used, and did you have to sand the tub first? We have a 60+ year old Cast Iron that needs some retro work, and would love to save it. -- I threw out the map a long time ago. Now I follow my own direction! |

| reply to natedj Wow that looks great. I am also interested in the tub pain, I have a tub that needs it, but all my research says that old tubs cannot be salvaged, what did you use? said by ArthurS :Wow, what an improvement!!!! Fantastic job you did there! So tell us more about the bathtub paint... What kit did you use? How is the finish? Fumes from the enamel? Challenges/ problems you encountered? Things you would have done different? I think its called tub & tile paint, I'll see if I can get more detail description on it. The plan was to replace the tub with a tub / shower fiberglass molded insert. Then I digressed because I thought that it was out of my league, and getting it to fit might cost me my sanity. Then I tried to replace just the tub, but the newer tubs are shallower than this old cast iron model. So sitting at this crossroads and leaning towards contracting out the tub work, I rolled upon the tub & tile paint at Lowes. It cost about $16 and had two separate cans that had to be mixed together. (they also had the same product in an aerosol can for twice the cost) The fumes were very strong and the paint had to be stored in freezer (wife hated that part) between coats. The instructions noted the after mixing paint, use within 36 hours or else discard and start over. For $16 I said why not and it turned out great.
said by Nightwing :Looks great! What kind of flooring is that and how long did it all take? The flooring was a special order vinyl from Lowes. It is some thick stuff, people usually mistake it for tile. I replace the tile floor with (2) layers of treated ¾ plywood.

Not having an exhaust fan, could result in the border peeling earlier than expected. That designer paint was a pain in the neck, in addition to the base coat, I had to recoat the wall (3) times. Word of advice
Do not use cheap brushes. It took me about 2 and a half weeks and the total dollar figure was about $1800 to $2000 (max) that includes everthing. My wife took about 200 pictures but as you see about 75% of them were ommited for uploading purposes. The ceiling light/vent was actually the first item that was replaced.
said by beck :Beautiful! So, if it was your first time at a big project, how did you know how to do everything??? Google is my friend and I would plan ahead and go to hardware stores and talk to the sales people and sort of quiz them on the best approach. After getting the basic guidance I tackled one part of the project at a time. That sink was a killer just to rip it out without compromising the tile and structure around it, I had to leave it and revisit it a couple days later. -- Good judgement comes with experience...Experience comes after bad judgements |
