Re: Has anybody COMPLETED porting to their new provider?

anon : I finally understand the porting process, and perhaps this will help others understand it to. I am leaving out names of companies(with the exception of Sunrocket for obvious reasons) as that is not the issue. I received a letter today from a CLEC used by by Sunrocket. For those unfamiliar with CLECs, the phone company you hire does not own your phone number. CLECs own the phone number. Therefore, when you port a number, there could be 4 companies involved, the former phone company, in most of our cases that is Sunrocket, the CLEC your former company used, your new company, and the CLEC they use. You can find out what CLEC owns your number at this site which others have published a while back.
»nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/w···CLanding

Now that Sunrocket is no longer in business, using the site above to find out who owns my number, I wrote the CLEC to find out why there has been a delay porting my number. It seems that they haven't received a request from the CLEC that my new company is using or from the new company themselves. After many e-mails back and forth, I now understand why. Sunrocket's CLEC will process a Firm Order Commit[FOC] date upon receipt of a request. For example in my case, the CLEC Sunrocket was using said once they receive my gaining provider's request (That's the new CLEC that my new company is using), they will process the request that day. The FOC date will be provided at that time. They said the FOC date is about a week after they receive the request. It was explained in the letter I got that the delay in porting often occurs with the new company or the CLEC they are using. The new CLEC needs to prepare for the arrival of your phone number. They will not request the port until they have everything set for receiving that number and making sure it will work with your new provider. Since many of our new companies were overwhelmed with new business, that is why it has been taking a long time. Hopefully this will clear up the issue everyone is having. The first e-mail response I received from Sunrocket's CLEC indicated that they've never received a request from my new company. Therefore I thought that my new company didn't do a thing to port my number. Now I understand that is not the case. They haven't requested my number from Sunrocket's CLEC because they aren't ready yet to receive it. At least I feel a little better about the company I am using. I only hope I am correct. I guess if I had chosen another company that wasn't so busy or was bigger, then maybe the port would have occurred by now. I hope this clears up questions you have. If you're concerned about your port, I now understand the new phone company you are using needs to be contacted, not Sunrocket's CLEC.

And what can we do about it?

If you want to ensure that you get your number to ATTCV at all costs, and given that time is of the essence now, you should consider taking the following steps:

•As much as I'm loathe to suggest it, sign up with TB to guarantee your number continues to be serviced.

•Initiate a port to either your local telco (POTS) or to Vonage.

•Once the port to the other telco is complete, sign up with ATTCV requesting your number to be ported.

Of course, porting to POTS could well cause you to owe a steep installation fee to your incumbent telephone provider (ATT South currently charges $43), but you might be able to get it waived, especially if you're porting your number back to them. With Vonage, you might be able to get away from them within your one-month trial period, but there's no guarantee of that. If you have to keep your Vonage account open for more than a month, you will be stuck paying them a disconnect fee (I think it's $40).

The fact that ATTCV won't port from "every other" voip provider (as most others do) is a very odd practice on their part, IMO--they are shooting themselves in the foot. But at some level, you just have to accept the way it is and act accordingly (which means, either jump through these hoops, or don't sign up with ATTCV). :(

central NH : I called Verizon on wed, 7/18. At first, I was told that I could not get my number back (ported from verizon to sunrocket)I then called the company that actually owns the number (no phone company owns a number - not sunrocket, not verizon, not vonage)to ask if there was anything they could do to help port the number. I was told that due to the circumstances, porting should go fine even w/o sunrocket releasing it.I then called verizon back, was transferred to a local office, transferred to porting, and explained to them what I had been told. They said they would put the porting request in with a tentative hook up date of Friday, 7/27. They did not guarantee me my old number, but said they would try. I called this morning to check the status, and was told my new date for porting completion was Thursday, 7/26. I am taking the new date, a day sooner, as a positive sign.I even re-explained that I was a sunrocket customer, and he said everything looked fine. I did, however, agree with teleblend to keep my number active by paying for a month's service. I did this because no matter who I talked to, and after reading everything here, I knew the number needed to be active. Even though my sunrocket service came back on, I did not want to take a chance of loosing my number.
Hope my information helps someone....
