slowdown when connecting through router

I'm getting fantastic speeds when im connected directly to my modem, but when i go through my dlink DI-524 router things start slowing down significantly.

prerouter speeds: 6-10mbit
postrouter speeds: 300-500kbit

anyone else have this issue or any advice? i know my router is working fine because local transfers i can do at 10mbyte
