Well, got my install today. I'm seeing SUSTAINED download speeds of 15mbps, and upload speeds of about 1.2mbps. I live in a brand new development with brand new cables and a brand new (under-utilized) node...so I'm enjoying my new cable broadband.

AT&T's only chance of getting me back is to push better speeds over that fiber than I'm getting now, as well as multiple HD streams via uverse. Till then, I'm staying with Cox/Dish.

Rolling out technology in a new area is never easy and it challenges and frustrates many of us. I have to say that after waiting 2 years, U-verse was installed in my neighborhood. Two years ago, one CSR told me they could see the RT on the network 450 feet from house. Another would say that is impossible, the service is not even in Michigan. Well, the physical box truely was there about two years ago and there must have been some source that told her it was ready, but sometimes you just have to walk away and let the process mature. When enough people walk away, they get the message, and if they don't, they don't deserve our business anyway. No one likes being missled; my one year contract with SBC and DISH lasted two years because of erroneous information, but I persisted with 1500/384 and the DISH.

Now that I have U-verse, it tests out at around 5000/900 on average to this site and to the residential gateway manufacturer, 2Wire. I don't get that speed when downloading software from Microsoft, Sun, ASUS, or even my own web site. Go to TCPIQ.com and run a test, there's reality. It monitors my speed every 30 minutes and it is a rollacoaster. The last 7-day average, 234 tests, shows 2834/893. You may think that is fast, but it took about 45-60 seconds as the progress bar hung up along the way. The perceived speed stinks because you have t sit there and wait when you don't expect to wait.

The TV picture is not any better than it was with the DISH Network. At times the sound is distored. Yes, I can record multiple programs at one time or visit several multimedia sites at one time without much degredation, but in the end, the internet is the internet and I still wait for the site I am accessing to pass a file down the Internet at its own network's speed. And yes, maybe TV over IP may be cool, but subjectively, the DISH had a little more quality.

In the end, it is bragging rights versus functionality and perceived satisfaction. I wonder where it will all settle out...oh yeah, it doesn't because something new will be out just when this technology is fine tuned. Welcome to the 21st century. {A little long-winded}

Thanks for telling me about TCPIQ. I have signed up and I have it running, it will be interesting to see what it shows.

Good job. Let me know what you find out. In the past I have posted some speed graphs for people to look at but no one can explain the vast difference. Granted, the CO is out of AU, but with the Internet being what it is today, that should not make that big a difference. I'll post some graphs for you and send you a link later via IM. It is disappointing to see such a huge speed difference. I would expect dslReports and 2Wire to give good results, let's face it, they have sort of have to. Look at my speed test results under jjgk 48236. I have been tracking the different speeds in the comment section (i.e., 2Wire = and TCPIQ.com=)

Have you tried the AT&T DSL speed tests in the support section. They used to work with my regular Express DSL package, but the speed page has not given me any results since I've been on U-verse.

Just had my U-Verse installed yesterday. 3 TV's & 2 PC's. Installation was about 6 hours & installer ran new CAT5 cable to every set. Signal quality blows Time-Warner away. DSL (3meg down) is roughly the same as DSL over phone line. Picture quality is just below what Verizon FiOS offers (I work for them in C.O.)but since I live in A.T.&T. territory, I don't have a choice.
Just FYI, your rated down load speed is on guaranteed between your modem/router and the DSLAM in the central office. Most bottleneck occur because of low bandwidth between the servers and the cloud. When everyone goes to Gig-E, then you'll see some real improvement.

My install took about the same but it was quiting time and so they quit without getting the iNet up to speed, but the AT&T Direct guys took care of it...they are very helpfull. I just just did not appreciate the installers cutting the coax from Comcast and DISH to run the CAT5. Drill a new hole!

Yup, that is kind of my point, it makes you wonder if the Elite service is worth the extra money or if I should have stayed with Express. Like we agree, all things being equal, we are at the mercy of the cloud and the site we are accessing. I am sure I would get the guaranteed speed to the AT&T Speed Test Page, but I cannot get it to work. It just hangs once you start the test. I even made it a trusted site to no avail.
