Just FYI, your rated down load speed is on guaranteed between your modem/router and the DSLAM in the central office. Most bottleneck occur because of low bandwidth between the servers and the cloud. When everyone goes to Gig-E, then you'll see some real improvement.

Good job. Let me know what you find out. In the past I have posted some speed graphs for people to look at but no one can explain the vast difference. Granted, the CO is out of AU, but with the Internet being what it is today, that should not make that big a difference. I'll post some graphs for you and send you a link later via IM. It is disappointing to see such a huge speed difference. I would expect dslReports and 2Wire to give good results, let's face it, they have sort of have to. Rolling out technology in a new area is never easy and it challenges and frustrates many of us. I have to say that after waiting 2 years, U-verse was installed in my neighborhood. Two years ago, one CSR told me they could see the RT on the network 450 feet from house. Another would say that is impossible, the service is not even in Michigan. Well, the physical box truely was there about two years ago and there must have been some source that told her it was ready, but sometimes you just have to walk away and let the process mature. When enough people walk away, they get the message, and if they don't, they don't deserve our business anyway. No one likes being missled; my one year contract with SBC and DISH lasted two years because of erroneous information, but I persisted with 1500/384 and the DISH.

Now that I have U-verse, it tests out at around 5000/900 on average to this site and to the residential gateway manufacturer, 2Wire. I don't get that speed when downloading software from Microsoft, Sun, ASUS, or even my own web site. Go to TCPIQ.com and run a test, there's reality. It monitors my speed every 30 minutes and it is a rollacoaster. The last 7-day average, 234 tests, shows 2834/893. You may think that is fast, but it took about 45-60 seconds as the progress bar hung up along the way. The perceived speed stinks because you have t sit there and wait when you don't expect to wait.

The TV picture is not any better than it was with the DISH Network. At times the sound is distored. Yes, I can record multiple programs at one time or visit several multimedia sites at one time without much degredation, but in the end, the internet is the internet and I still wait for the site I am accessing to pass a file down the Internet at its own network's speed. And yes, maybe TV over IP may be cool, but subjectively, the DISH had a little more quality.

In the end, it is bragging rights versus functionality and perceived satisfaction. I wonder where it will all settle out...oh yeah, it doesn't because something new will be out just when this technology is fine tuned. It's sad to read that a 'future proof' technology like FTTP has been delegated to a second class service in favor of a third class technology like FTTN. I guess that even 100% fiber in the hands of AT&T/SBC can become crap.

I switched from AT&T adsl to TW business cable about two years ago and I never looked back. I started with 7000/1000 business class service and last month TW upgraded my service to 10000/2000 for the same price. I get 10500/1940 kbps all the time.

Cable is not perfect, you will see some fluctuations in speed but the PHY layer is more stable and robust than adsl. Actually it was a request here made by most and actually became a feature. You can edit your request for up to 3 days in the direct forums now. Not just at&t, all of them. The only thing is just don't reply to them. Edit before you reply. Replying knocks it off the list we see.

It's not the greatest system in the world, but it's 85% better than what we had. We had some people that would IM us as least once every 10 minutes, and they would do it to all of us.

Cox is coming out tomorrow to install my Internet/Phone. I just need the basic phone line, but I'm getting 12/1 Premier service.

Phone is costing me $10 a month including tax, and internet (12/1) will be $41.95. It works out to be a little cheaper than what I'm paying with AT&T, and 2x the speed.
I'll be keeping my Dish Network for the TV portion.

My family, for the most part, hates U-verse and wants me to cancel it. I like it, but maybe just because I like the idea of it and the technology behind it. It hasn't really given me any problems lately (aside from this nasty HDMI mess their latest patch broke), so it's not that.. I'm on the FTTP platform. I tried to order it on the spot, but the rep told me there was a problem with his system and he'd have to call me back. Fast forward 3 days. No call back. I called AT&T FTTP just now, and was told my address was set to go live on August 6th, but it's still not "green." I explained to him that UVERSE was marketed to me, and he told me that was not possible, as my area is not green yet. I'm getting very fed up with the mis-information! They still show August 6th as the "green" date for my address, however, it's almost a month after that and they still can't get their stuff straight. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and who I can contact to get the correct answer? I'm about a day away from just dropping AT&T and going with Cox, as much as I want to give U-Verse a try.
