Thanks for the information. I am a huge fan of JVC. My TV, Hometheater, S-VHS VCR and Everio Camcorder are all JVC.
You're most welcome. Since you're familiar with JVC products, you should be quite satisfied with this unit, if it does all that you want. I forgot to mention before, that it doesn't have a programmed TV commercial skip for the VCR, but you can use the FF and pause buttons to substitute.

Good luck in your search. I'd look for some sales around the holidays, if you're not in a hurry.

some dvd recorders do some do not, mine dont, but you can take the digital cable box and hook it nto the Composite inputs on the dvd recorder and it works!

msmisfit, what unit did you get? I am consider on getting one.
I settled on a JVC, after first buying a Toshiba that I had to return.

*I* had to adjust to DVD Combo Recorders, being slower to start than my DVD player combo, but the Toshiba model was a piece of junk. The JVC is slightly noisy when it first starts up, and starts rewinding, but it has worked flawlessly, compared to the Toshiba[which hung up on tapes and disks, and was slow as molasses]. I've tested it on TV recording/play back with DVD-R disks and VCR tapes [with a direct connection], and playing CD-WMA music files.

I can record any channel but watch only lower tier or HD over air.

Correction: I can only watch over the air channels when I record any channel including HBO and on-Demand, I was trying to be able to be able to view whatever came in without a box but not enough inputs

Yes they do. You can run a splitter to do this.
This is what I've done using a cable box for anyone else out there:

I run a regular cable via splitter to the DVD-R and then on to the tv via component cable. From the splitter I run a cable to the box. From the cable box I run a component cable to the tv and an S-video cable to the DVD-R plus I run cables to a VCR so that I can both record and view tapes.
To the TV I run an inside antena to pickup HD signals (did this when Charter didn't get ABC HD). Somewhere in there I've also got my stereo system.

This allows me the most options

I can watch any channel I get but record only lower tier

I can record any channel but watch only lower tier or HD over air.

I can record and watch (or record while away) any channel

Only with an additional cable box could I record and watch any channel.

I have a Samsung HD plasma tv and a Samsung DVD-R.

I'm wanting to use the DVD/R just like a VCR, watch one, record another or record while we're away!
I've just purchased a DVD/VCR recorder combo with tuners, that does what you want... on MY setup. I do NOT have a cable card or a set top box. I have a splitter on my direct cable connection from the wall.

I don't know if the ATSC/NTSC/Qam tuners will work for you, with a splitter, but it's worth inquiring about.

I've seen a dvd recorder that didn't have a tuner. It had hd component in, dvi in standard component in, with mirrored out puts. So what ever video source you fed through the dvd was able to come out to the tv.

But you are using a cable card. So I guess that would depend on your TV. Does the tv have a video/audio out that could be fed to the dvd burner?

If it has a tuner and a cable tv in...the audio portion is already on that same cable.

Someone has misinformed you that a DVD recorders do not have tuners. Had I not been in Wal-Mart the other day I would not have this to offer. Panasonic and others do make them with digital and Analog tuners.

As for recording all you should need is a video in and use that cable.
