 | IS SpywareTerminator good or bad? Would you install it on your system as a 4th line of defense to do on-demand scans? Does it install rouge software? What the hell is a "crawler" that is part of EULA? Is it effective?
Currently using superAntispywarePro BUT it did not pickup all the spyware in an infected test box. |

 | reply to tempnexus I would not install it unless you plan to use the realtime scanner. Even with the realtime scan turned off, it uses a decent amount of RAM. Therefore, if you only are looking for an ondemand scanner, I would look elsewhere. If you want realtime protection, it is probably one of your best(and only) free solutions. Others being Windows defender, spyware catcher, etc.. |

 | reply to amysheehan However,
quote: Note on SpywareTerminator: We originally listed Spyware Terminator on this page out of concerns that Crawler, the company behind the product, had established connections with IBIS, a well known adware distributor responsible for such adware programs as Wintools, Websearch, & Huntbar. Although we found no problems in our initial testing with Spyware Terminator, and while the vendor itself announced that it was exiting the adware business (1), we decided out of caution to impose a three month probation period before we would consider re-testing and, if warranted, de-listing the the product from the Rogue/Suspect list. During that three month probation period we monitored the behavior of IBIS and Crawler. At the end of the three month probation period we re-tested Spyware Terminator, again finding no problems serious enough to justify listing the program on this page. As the vendor involved has not been involved in the distribution of adware for many months, and as the program itself exhibits no problems serious enough to warrant mention on this page, we have decided to de-list Spyware Terminator from the Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."
Note: not to be confused with Spyware X-terminator from Stompsoft

It seems a good program, but it also depends on what you have running for protection.
Here with KIS7 is has caused some headaches. This thread reminded me I had downloaded the latest, to try the latest web component, and on uninstalling the old one, which was only 4 months old, found the folder to uninstall was 10,000MB, not sure why. Uninstalled, went to reboot and BSOD
stop: 0xA(0x1,0x1C,0x1,0x804FAEE4)
So now my box is hosed as well. It has caused issues before too. Seeing as I play with all sorts of programs, and actually try to break my computer(dont ask)it isnt all this programs fault.
Simply the fact, make sure you at least create a restore point before trying it out. But then you should do that with anything you try.

I have realtime disabled, and SP_RSSER.exe is using 39,700 RAM at the moment, not to mention 72,000 of virtual memory. I am probably going to just uninstall the thing while I test ThreatFire.
Not saying SpywareTermintor is bad, just don't like it as a on-demand scanner. |

| Thanks for the link. The broke computer is fixable, only lost a few photos of the kids in the process, but I was planning on rebuilding that box anyway.
All the same, wish I had read that thread, as it is not my main scanner. But that 10,000mg file after looking at the HDD with a bartPE disk shows most of windows O/S environment went with it, it's hosed big time. Pity really, as I was thinking it would be a good active tool, along side some of the A/V proggies with less detection. -- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke |

 | Well that was a fluke. Windows after 3 trials has installed over the top. Not a practiced method, but enough to get my files. -- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke |
