This news article gives a very misleading view of this NATO report. The brief quote attached gives the impression that it was some sort of study on the severity of interference from BPL. It was nothing of the sort (this the use of the word "may" in the quote). Note a (full) paragraph in the Conclusions:
quote: The cumulative noise field strength due to the PLT emissions may have a possible detrimental effect upon military HF radio communications and COMINT systems. This is particularly the case if In-House PLT systems should become widely popular. However, it should be noted here that the determination of the nature and the severity of any possible detrimental effect upon the military systems was outside the RTGs expertise and ToR.
In other words, we have no idea how much effect, if any, there will be in these radio systems, since it's not what we set out to do.
This report is the output of a group set up to develop theoretical models and other tools for analyzing the effects of wireline communications systems, both BPL and xDSL, on HF radio communication. That's it. Playing it up as some sort of report on the severity of interference is very misleading. |
