Any special steps required use router w/ DSL Extreme modem?

I had Internet service with SBC (now AT&T) and Comcast before and for each occassion, I am provided with a DSL/Comcast modem. To add a router, all I need just plug the LAN cable from the modem to the router and entered my username and password IN THE ROUTER configuration settings and that's it. Even with Pacific Bell (before it becomes SBC), I just select PPoE and that is.

Just today I received my DSL Extreme modem and I am wondering if there is anything else I need to configure in the router? I have a Linksys WRT54GS and I have already reset the router so everything is in default mode.

Unfortunately, there is no manual available in DSL Extreme website for router configuration (just the basic one).

BTW, can I access the DLink DSL Modem directly? When I had my 2Wire and Speedstream DSL modem, I can access it directly for troubleshooting, such as making the modem into bridge mode, etc.

Our dynamic connections are a little different that AT&T as they use DHCP instead of PPPoE. You therefore are not required to use a username and password in order to connect if you have service in one of our local networks. You service are would fall under DHCP. The modem comes out of the box in bridge mode. All you need to do is reset your router to DHCP or obtain an IP address automatically and connect it directly to the modem. Our network will assign your Linksys router an IP address via DHCP.

The setup is very simple to make it easy on our end users. If you got a modem from us there should be a section in the setup instructions that talks about how to setup the system if you are using your own router.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, George. I do have DSL service with DSLExtreme and just received my DSL modem from DSLExtreme today. The instructions that came with the modem is very bare and doesn't provide as much information about connecting to the router.

As a matter of fact, the instructions state that I need to install the WinPOET software. But when I spoke with DSLE tech. support, they said I do NOT have to install it. Unfortunately, the WinPOET software created some background services and an entry in WinXP Dial-up network that messed up my ActiveSync (Windows Mobile sync software). I though it just my laptop, but I test install it on my other laptop that have ActiveSync and it give the same issue.

Anyways, I was able to uninstall the software but my DSL service is not ON today according to the tech. support. SBC will turn on the service (circuit?) by 12:00 AM, but as of 12:49 AM today my DSL service still not active.

I'll report back if I have issues with connecting to my router.

If your service isn't connected by the morning please give our support team a call back. That would likely indicate that there is a problem on the phone line and our support team needs to open a ticket with the Telco. Is your modem currently in sync?

Did you receive the tri-fold Dynamic DSL Setup Instructions with the blue cover with the modem? I just reviewed that and don't see any reference to installing WinPoet on it. You should have received that with a blue setup disk.

There is a simple section on those instructions that advised to reset the router. Since routers come by default in DHCP mode this is the easiest way to get service established under the plug and play model.

Yes, I received the tri-fold Setup Instructions. It doesn't refer to the WinPoet application specifically, it just state that I need to run the included CD which install WinPoet.

The Status light is always OFF and the DSL light is blinking a few times, then off for a period of time. It's 1;30 AM and I just tested the modem and it's not working. I hope SBC will connect my line by tomorrow morning as I have been looking forward for the service.

It definitely sounds like a line issue. To confirm you have all of the micro-filters properly installed on all devices that connect to the phone line correct? This would include phones, fax machines, satellite receivers, alarms systems etc. That is one of the main things that can prevent your modem from getting sync.

Go ahead and give our support team a call back tomorrow morning. They can confirm the setup with you and open a trouble ticket with the phone company.

On a side note did you get the blue setup disk? When following the setup prompts using that disk it should simply reset your computer LAN connection to obtain an IP address automatically as well as setup your email. It shouldn't walk you through setting up WinPoet. We do include WinPoet as well as Firefox on the root of the CD in case there is an instance when someone gets the wrong disk or needs it for trouble shooting purposes. The main walk through shouldn't have you automatically install it though.

Thanks

Hi George,

I spoke with the tech support and the DSL line is now working without issue.

However, I am now having problem with the router, as originally mention in the beginning of the thread.

I have hard-reset my Linksys router to clear any information from my old SBC connection. I have also upgraded the router firmware to the latest version. I have setup the router for DHCP (NOT PPoE) as described in the above pictures. The 2nd pictures shows that the router can't get any IP from the modem.

But I am still can't connect to the Internet through my router, only through direct connection to the DLink DSL Modem.

I though my router broke, so I brought to my friend's place that have SBC service and it worked (after configuring it for SBC). I reset it again, and try connecting to my DSL Extreme modem and no go.

Any other things I need to do besides configuring the router based on the above pictures?

It sounds like you may need to add an additional DHCP connection to your line. This allows you to switch between hardware and have the device assigned a new IP address.

Login to the My Account section of our website by going to »www.dslextreme.com/access

From there select the link to add an additional DHCP connection/IP addresses on the right. That should do the trick for you.

Let me know.

Make sure you reboot your modem after you add that second DHCP connection.

Hi George,

That really did the trick! My Linksys router now works just fine and tested with 2 computers.

Thank you for the help! I think this should be a sticky thread since it's not a router specific issue, but more of account-IP configuration.

Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate the speedines of your response!
