New install in progress...

Well, despite a lot of negative comments about Hawaiian Tel from folks around (in real life), ordering new service was clean, pleasant, and so far a cinch. My initial call on Tuesday was answered by a live person after 2 rings... no automated service. The modem arrived 2 days later. The tech came out today, fixed some wiring and I have dial tone. Next Tuesday or Wednesday, I should get sync on the modem.

I was worried that I would be too far from the CO. Well I AM very far from my old CO. What I didn't realize is that there is a relatively new CO in North Kihei... I am less than 2K feet from it in spatial distance.

The tech/installer was very good, knew a lot... originally on the job with GTE, FWIW. Said there were only 2 guys doing all of N. Kihei and they average 5 jobs each per day.

He expressed some disappointment that they weren't doing fiber to the premise... not in the cards with Carlyle at the helm. However, he pointed out that Verizon had absolutely no intention of doing it in Hawaii either. They probably had no intention of upgrading capacity to adsl2+ speeds, either... so it looks like we are better off sold by Verizon.

Were you able to get the ADSL +2 speeds at your location ? As far as I understand only Makawao on Maui has been upgraded.

New speed packages not available just yet but should be imminent, I think.

I stopped by the new house this morning with my first load of crap for the day and, lo and behold, my modem had sync. I should have some equipment hooked up tomorrow and will run a speed test then. So far, very good service from HT.

OTOH, my wife stopped by the cable company (Oceanic Time Warner) to turn on the cable. Everything's ready at the house... all they have to do is hook us up "on the pole" (actually a green box across the street, I believe). The soonest they can send someone out for this 2 minute job is 9/28. Yes, the 28th!!! I am tempted to go Dish.

A little over two weeks isn't that bad. I've heard reports that people have had to wait months for Oceanic to do a install.
