Actually the iPhone has EDGE (some call it 2.5G), a slightly better technology than GPRS (2G).

Falls Church, VA		 and wimax is 4G, so it wouldn't matter what 3G apple had chosen (if they had) rather than going with tired old 2.5G speeds.
