| Why would Apple do this? and why it wouldn't Apple loves to control their products customer experience from beginning to end. With PCs they do the hardware, software, & service functions. Same with the iPod where the software, hardware, and content are all controlled by Apple. That they MIGHT want to control the iPhone experience all the way thru the provision of voice and data access is not out of the realm of possibility.
But they would be stepping in to an area where their expertise is minimal. And voice and data access customers are notoriously a demanding and generally dissatisfied group - very unlike the typical Apple fanboys. Apple might be worried that stepping in to an area where they could get a huge black eye might tarnish their image and spillover in to their other product lines.
Given the limited experience that Apple has accumulated so far in this area, I doubt they will make such a big commitment this soon. I doubt they would want to take the risk. I think they would rather Google take such a risk and then Apple would partner with them just about the time their AT&T commitment would be expiring.

Perhaps they're looking at buying it up and then subleasing it to someone else to handle all the work for them, in some way that'll save them from doing all the work but still allow them to slap the Apple name on it. |
