The sample base is too small and the audience does not have diverse demographics. This is not statistically significant.

Actually, not. The survey is hardly a good example of Comcast subscribers. I suspect that espaeth 's estimate that the survey is skewed toward the cable power users is more likely.

espaeth : Somehow I doubt the BBR audience is a good representative cross-section of Comcast's 10+ million subs. Judging by the number of abuse complaint threads here, the top 10-20% of users seems to be unusually well represented.

This borders on useful! Hasn't Comcast said that the abusers are in the "Top 1%?"

Removing the "I don't know" responses skews the numbers, but it still looks like 400GB or so is around the 90th percentile. Someone who is good in stats would have to tell me if that suggests that the 99th percentile is far off in the distance or something closer to 450 GB.

100 single-layer DVDs a month. That's a lot of downloading.

deblin : MAC address filtering is trivial. The MAC address is in clear text in 802.11 frames. Wait long enough, and you'll find a valid MAC. I don't bother with MAC filtering or disabling SSID broadcast. I just use WPA2 with a randomly generated 64-bit hex key, which I rotate every so often :)

WEP is weak... Use WPA, WPA2. MAC addy filtering can also be cracked if the one is determined.

BaitFish : My average as recorded by DU Meter is somewhat inflated because this, my primary PC, is on a LAN and DU Meter also counts that traffic as well from what I've observed. My vote is cast nonetheless.

chRoniX10 : I use 250-300GB per month on all 4 of my families PC's. I use Newsgroups and torrents to a very large extent on both my primary PC and my laptop. My sister uses relatively little bandwidth but I recently introduced her to Bittorrent so that will all change very quickly and my parents PC is downloading files from Emule 24/7.

Mele20 du meter will show any connection made by the computer including streaming radio. However it cannot differentiate from lan traffic and wan traffic. Also if you have an ip based phone obviously that wont be counted either. You also would have to add the bandwidth of all your computers. The best way to measure is if your router keeps track, that way you know exactly how much bandwidth is used on your wan side for all your devices.

I backup my hosting servers to home and push daily incrementals of my home machine backups off-site each day. In January I moved those operations over to DSL, hence the drop in traffic.

was less than 100. I figure it averages out at around
50-100 GB/month, with it being closer to 100 than 50. But

My provider has a billing control panel I can log into but the usage tab is not active. I would very interested in my usage for the 2 years I have been with them.

Whats the wholesale cost of 10GB of bandwidth?...probably not very much.

This poll is not statistically significant for 95% of the broadband user base.

The users that post in BBR are early adopters and probably in the top 5% of down loaders. 95% of users are going to be in the very low end of this chart and will not be accounted for in this poll.

I used to be a big downloader many years ago, but it was taking up too much time. I download about 10-20gig a month now, and thought of myself as a heavier user compared to the average, but I guess I was wrong.

Madcap : I burn through 200 a month easy. I'm a beta tester for a few games right now. Having to download 1-2 gig clients, not just once but a few. Constant patching between 20-200 megs. Not to mention the fact I play a released game and have to take their patches.

Passing modules back and forth between classmates, downloading fansubbed anime (all non-licensed, removed once word comes someone here has grabbed the anime and licensing it here). Trading that anime with friends. I've metered it and hit 200 but I haven't hit 300 in a month since I was on Optimum Online and acting as an active IRC distro for the anime.

I do a lot of cooperative processing of small data files ... at any given time I'm running say 50-100 programs on each of my 30 systems each are processing files that are a minimum of 100Mb in size;... each file takes about 20 seconds (on average to process) and return the data.

I also have a system that I use for personal abuse

Mele20 : Thank you. I do vaguely recall now that a couple of years ago when Road Runner users were upset about supposed bandwidth restrictions that I did use DUMeter for a month. I didn't purchase it though and had forgotten I ever used it even briefly. I'm using more bandwidth now (especially streaming radio which I forget and leave on while I sleep) than then and I do have another computer connected but don't download on it much. I have an older Linksy router and can't use Tomato. Whenever I buy a new router I will get one that can use that third party firmware.

Chris 313 : DUMeter shows all activity on a given computer, including streaming video.

If you have more than one computer online and going, router firmware like Tomato has a built in bandwith monitor that catches everything that goes over a LAN.

ztmike : I'm at 7.832GB for a total since 2 days ago.. so i voted for 200-250gb /month maybe less.

I have been away from my computer mostly..bad toothache i been having so mostly been in bed. :(
