I generally don't disagree on that. However, I was specifically asked about it this AM so am trying to find out all I can about it, specifically, before they purchase it if they haven't already.

Registry "pruning" is just as the name implies can make it look all nice and tidy however cut to deep and you'll kill the tree.

Again, I understand that issue. I also know that there are a lot of registry cleaners out there on the market. I am interested in only this one and if anyone has had occasion to use it or know about it, specifically. I've been 'into security issues' for some time but am not aware of many of the programs out there. This was a new one for me and when asked about it, I didn't have a response. I would like to be able to give a response with that particualr program in mind.

I am not trying to be nasty, btw., and your advice is good. The person who asked me about it has bought it already, I am afraid, and I would like either to be able to tell them to use it carefully or to get rid of it and forget about the wasted $$.

I apologise for my previous short humorous answer, I've used a few registry optimizers that check for bad missing or changed paths names and the like while they are great for pointing out errors i always double check the findings and usually wind up making manual edits and unless im experiencing some error I don't usually bother, used to be on older hardware that optimizing the registry gave an improvement in performance a modern machine with a fast harddrive and cpu with enough ram you'll not even notice the difference afterwards, just my experience.

It actually may have been meant as humorous but was really good advice. That's why I have never been comfortable with any one of these 'cleaners'.

A quick visit to the products website immediately gave me the impression "be careful with this one"......simply from reading the "claims" made of the product.....such as the claim to "greatly enhance"...............an although I have not tryed the product.....from the claims made on the website to "boost speed".........well I have to ask myself if the claims are nothing more than smoke and mirrors ment to sell the product.
The Registry is a vastly hugh department. An yes certain tweaks can enhance system speed while other tweaks could totally wipe out the system.......so how would anyone know which "tweaks" this product would make and do we actually want those changes made........most registry cleaners fail in this area....to explain what and where the tweaks are being made to and why. An in-correct tweak made to Explorer could force a re-format....etc., etc. So before purchasing such a product I would want "details" not "fairy tales".
Many people think that if they make a Backup of the registry before making tweaks then everything will be just fine.....Wrong ! What happens when the means to re-install that Backup disappears.... and the system wont boot correctly because Explorer is corrupt.....or use of the Mouse is lost and you do not know how to use the keyboard for help.......results= re-format.
The product in question is an un-known to me. However, although I have three Registry programs installed on this particular computer...I most seriously doubt that the average User has any actual need of a Registry Cleaner or would even know how to properly use one. "Automatic Cleaning/Tweaking" can have nasty results. An I did not see anything mentioned on the products website that would make me feel comfortable advising someone to use it....on the other hand.....nither have I enough information on the product to offer any negetive comments.

I think that with what I've gotten, my suggestion is that they skip it. If they've already bought it, I am going to more strongly suggest that they not run it and consider the $$ a loss but their computer possibly saved. I think that your points are all I need and were something that I felt, or at least partially, myself. Thank you so much for having checked as far as you did and for reinforcing my thoughts. I needed that!

Hi,

Well, I cannot offer any comment on the cleaner in question as I've never used it. But, just as The Snowman, I've three here that are used regularly .. and, a fourth I employ occasionally. As others have indicated, registry cleaners must be used .. carefully. I've got a t-shirt, or two, for being overzealous and it wasn't pretty. That said, generally, with experimentation, one can find such tools that can be used, dependably, safely, repeatably and without damage. Realizing it's just my opinion, and to possibly help save you the experimentation I've done, I offer these suggestions:

»www.macecraft.com/ - Macecraft Software offers some excellent cleaners. For a stand-alone cleaner, there is "RegSupreme", which is very good .. for more advanced capability, you'd be hard pressed to find a better cleaner than that included in their "jv16 PowerTools", which I use.

»www.pctools.com/ - PCTools' "Registry Mechanic" is a solid, safe, cleaner that has always performed well for me.

»www.ccleaner.com/ - course, "Crap Cleaner" has a dependable registry cleaner component. It is, at least currently, free.

Good luck.

In that I've not used one myself, never trusting myself and the trouble I don't want to have to face...are any of these tools safe to use for the truly novice? That's not me, but I still feel a novice enough not to trust myself.

I certainly would like to be able to either suggest that the person I told to remove RegBooster2 last night not use anything or give them a suggestion of what to use, as a stand alone cleaner. Is there such a thing that would be safe for a true novice but knows just enough to get in trouble?

In my opinion there are no safe cigarettes and there are no safe registry cleaners. Registry cleaners are like cigarettes. They make you feel good. They are addictive as hell, but the best you can hope for is that they won't kill you.

Thanks. You and I agree, but I wasn't sure if something had come along in the past few years since I've not been as active in this Forum.

I have used Tune Up Utilities ( »www.tune-up.com/ ) for several years and it has always worked well for me. It automatically makes backups for any changes you have made plus it has a great set of utilities so that you tweak Windows in endless ways. Your mileage may vary but it's easily one of the best software programs I have ever used.

How computer savvy are you, tune up fan and m8trix? Are either of you truly a novice user or do you both have a pretty good idea that when you push a button, you know what's happening, how, and why? My concern for anyone, including me if truth be told, that isn't fairly computer savvy, is that one can all too easily screw up a perfectly good system just for the sake of having a reg cleaner and saying you do. My feeling is, and really was for myself, was not to screw up something that isn't broken. The person that had the program about which I asked has so little knowledge, even less than myself, that they really had no business even thinking about having one on their system, IMHO. Too many times, these very same kind of people are the ones that cry for help as their system has failed in some way. In actuality, they are the ones that have failed.

So, I ask again...how familiar are you, and all who use reg cleaners, with your systems? How does one know what to allow to be cleaned and what not? You have to have education for that.
