Re: Sympatico throttling Bit Torrents now???

I too am getting throttled speeds, never goes above 30 and like others my setup has not changed at all.

I turned on encryption in utorrent and now my speed seems to be throttled at 150..

I'm being throttled at 450kB/sec right now, at 10:30 PM EST on a Saturday night.

I also thought I was going nuts. I've noticed throttling for the past week - 10 days. It's shifting in & out but seems most consistent between 5:00 PM & midnight. Usually I get cut down to roughly 70/70 for an hour or two, then it's down to 26/26.

I've tried getting answers from Bell - after an hour+ with tech support I finally got someone who understood what bittorrent was, he promised to call me back the following day after he got info from the business office. Needless to say, no follow-up so I tried the business office who referred me back to tech support. Urgh!

I don't know if images are allowed here, but can post images of the uTorrent speed grid. In these you can see the throttling. Most dramatic in the grid is the perfect flatline during the thottling period - I've never had bittorrent traffic (and multiple torrents active) that moved at an exactly consistent speed for 12 minutes at a time. (After about 12 minutes I get a brief improvement for about a minute - it's a consistent pattern. )

I'm in downtown Toronto.

Yes they throttle! Maybe not everyone right now but I know that my torrents are under 30kB/s from 5pm to midnight. Miraculously after midnight I'm back up to over 500kB/s. Can't wait for about an hour from now. What gets me is Sympatico's silence about this matter. I was in a Bell store the other day and saw a poster with one of the beavers noting consistent high speed. Their should be an asterisk to that statement. We have Expressvu, Mobility and a land line from Bell but no-warning-backhanded-throttling will be my reason to say bye bye Bell. I expect technology to make things faster not slower.

Yes and they don't tell the truth or want to about pretty much anything.

Well to those that believe you are throttling try this torrent:

Ubuntu ISO

This torrent is for sure going to reach 500KB/s, and should be an indicate whether BT is being throttled or your setup might be giving an issue, or that everything is normal and those Torrents go at 30KB/s regardless. So test this torrent and see how fast it goes ... you don't have to download the whole thing, just see if it goes to 500KB/s and can keep those high speeds for like 5minutes.

It's 5:15 PM and I see I'm back down to the moderate throttle rate, in this case 54/54. If it follows the normal pattern I'll drop to 26/26 within the hour.

The following is my uTorrent speed grid. At this point I had 6 active torrents, from 4 different trackers. I can't see any way this is just a chance occurrence.

Sorry, looks like I have to learn how to post images here. One of these should work in the meantime. »img265.imageshack.us/my.php?imag···iqw8.jpg

Yes but Cine are you trying out the Ubuntu torrent? Try that out and post some pics, or feedback.

Omr, I tried the Ubuntu, I tried other very active software, I even tried adding music that I'd otherwise have no interest in. Once the throttling is in effect nothing has any impact. The only change I can achieve is which torrent gets the bulk of my incredibly shrunken bandwidth.

Here's a current shot of roughly 9 hours of utorrent traffic. Ubunto was included for a few hours but I dropped it a while ago. The precipitous drop was about 4:30 PM. An hour later it plateaued at 26/26, with occasional mini-spurts it's 11:30 PM now & I'm shifting between 26 & 76.

The apparent 'shaping' of my bandwidth is pretty dramatic in this image. I don't see how this could be caused by anything but Sympatico.

Cine what about direct downloads from the web ?

Cine

@bell.ca

Direct downloads show no throttling. Speed tests done while throttled uTorrent is running appear normal as well. As far as I can see it's just torrent traffic that's affected. It started roughly 10 days ago. And it keeps to the same rough schedule, kicking in between 4 - 5PM and returning to normal between midnight & 2 AM.

Are you behind a router or VOIP gateway ? I'd suggest connecting your modem directly to your computer and testing it again tomorrow.

Cine

@bell.ca

jpabboud, When it first ground to a halt I assumed a problem on my end & tried all the usual fixes - reboot, alternative bittorrent app, removed my router, etc. Nothing had any effect. I don't see how a router could possibly cause this to occur with such regularity.

No VOIP here.

I've been using a lot of bandwidth for the last few months so it's possible I've attracted Bell's attention. So far I seem to still be on unlimited service - maybe this is there way to try & mitigate my usage.

This is just a shot in the dark, but I notice in a couple of the screenies that your upload speeds seem to be set very low. A while back, for whatever reason(never did figure out the "why"), when I set my max upload speed to anything lower than about 20 kb/s, utorrent downloading speeds seemed to be very slow (and appeared to be capped).

After trying to get my head around this for a while, I just turned my max download speed back up to 50ish and bingo...download speeds were back up to a respectable speed.

This is one of those "doesn't make sense...but hell it works" solutions. Won't claim that it will fix your problem if there is actually throttling going on, however it worked for me Give it a shot...nothing bad can come of it.

olegs69, you have the answer in your own SS....uTorrent is telling you that the Download is limited..set your upload speed higher and that will disappear.

on another note. If Bell is going to Throttle the speed of P2P application they would do it by limiting the amount of session/sockets per IP. which mean that you will see some slower download sometime and no issue other times.
