I've got a pretty definitive case of throttling. My http downloads are fine, but if I try to download multiple well seeded ubuntu torrents I'm stuck at 30kB/d, 5 kB/up.

Pulling the plug on all my accounts next week. I already have *choice coming in for the satellite, other providers are lined up for the long distance and the internet.

I am getting capped to 30 kbps, downloading the Ubuntu ISO and other files from a private tracker that typically maxes out my connection.

If I was to switch to Teksavvy is there a installation charge? Anybody recommend a good modem?

kramed, Bell finally drove me to Teksavvy. I just got my modem today - Speedtouch 516. There's no installation charge, you can buy a modem from a retailer of your choice or they'll sell you a choice of three different Speedtouch modems, starting from $100. It was shipped Canpar and arrived at my door the next day.

I still have a few days before my Teksavvy account comes online. In the meantime Bell is treating me to a whopping 27 k.

The funny thing is that I only learned about Teksavvy by searching out info on the throttling I was seeing on my Bell line. Bell also made no effort whatsoever to keep me as a customer (and I've been with them from the day they started DSL in Toronto)

This is absolute BS... why the heck are they doing this? Are my torrents now doomed to be slow as heck forever now?

I am going to try a TekSavvy DSL login to see if that helps.

Reading the last posts assures me that I too am being speed throttled. Before Sept 16 - 17, 2007 my torrent speeds were in excess of 200kb/s; now they are only at 24kb/s ( I envy those with the 30kb speed)and the throttling is all day. I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing slow DL speed for just torrents because it took me over 5 minutes to DL a lecture note for college.......which was just 7MB!

I am around the Markham and Ellesmere Rd area.

This is just anecdotal, but a buddy of mine on Bell Sympatico independently came to the conclusion that Bell was throttling BitTorrent on his line, as his torrent speeds had dropped a lot fairly recently. I'll probably be getting him on TekSavvy soon.

There must be some way around this. For some reason enabling encryption doesn't do anything for my speeds, but I'm sure there must be another way to get around this.

Are you guys sure it isnt uTorrent that is the problem? I've never been able to get good speeds with it. I'm using azureus and dling at 300k/s right now.

Same. From the very first time I tried UTorrent I wasn't able to get anything more then 20-30k. With BitComet I max out my connection every time.

But then why would we have amazing speeds with utorrent at certain times and as soon as it hits 5pm our speeds to go to hell. That would be a convenient explanation, but I think it's time to face the fact that bell is throttling torrents.

When I first noticed the throttling, I assumed it was a problem on my end & tried all the usual fixes. One of the things I tried was switching clients. There was absolutely no difference between uTorrent & bitcomet.

Like malvernkid said, I too get great speeds from (roughly) 2 AM to 4 PM. That's a change from my first post as Sympatico seems to have lengthened their throttling periods.

In a few days I should have my Teksavvy account up & running. If the speed remains constantly about 30 k for 24 hours straight then I'm willing to say it's dead-certain that Bell is throttling.

I know other Sympatico members in Toronto who, like me, use are heavy bittorent users. So far, none of them have been throttling. Judging from malvern's name, he's several km from me, so there's no clear pattern as to how Bell is applying this.

I was using Azuerus and was having my issues. I just switched to BitComet and all seems fine again... if it's just a temporary fix, who knows.. guess I'll find out eventually. Currently downloading at 160kb/s...

Most definitely agree, I just thought it's worth a shot for anyone who hasn't tried it out.

Guess I was just lucky and was downloading during a time when I wasnt capped... using BitComet now again, and it says I'm blocked....

Sigh... is there anything to do?? What sort of response would I get if I asked about this in the direct forum?
