Let me explain it to you....

A hypothetical for you...

I run a compamy. We NEED our Internet on ALL the time!
Cable doesn't cut it because it's simply not reliable enough. Right now I run a T1 line (just like THOUSANDS of companies do!). It costs me 400 dollars a month, but it's 99.99% reliable (as compared to Cable's 98%-FYI my Time Warner Cable was off FOR REAL this morning for 3 hours).

Like I said, I NEED my connection up all the time, because I make MONEY from it! Having it down like the cable was today costs me 1000 dollars an hour on average.

Now, Speakeasy-the company that I've relied upon for years for my T1 is offering ADSL2 for LESS THAN HALF what I'm paying them for T1! Granted, it's only 2/3 of the upload I enjoy now, but it's FIVE TIMES the download...PLUS-EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY-it's backed by Speakeasy's Service Level Agreement, which GUARANTEES performance! From past experience, I KNOW I can call them at 3 AM and someone will IMMEDIATELY answer the phone. Even more important, this it a TECHNICIAN, not a flunkie, and one that's located in Seattle, NOT India! Ths person will help me and stay with me until my problem or concern is dealt with-usually within a few minutes.

THAT'S what businesses PAY FOR...and for that level of service, Speakeasy's ADSL2 prices are a BARGAIN!!!!

You people think with a consumer mindset, NOT a business one. That's fine....because you can deal with losing your Internet overnight because the cable company wants to upgrade its amplifiers. You get fairly reliable Internet for a good price...

BUT...others are willing to pay for business class service, because to them (down) TIME IS MONEY!!

Got it?

Re: Let me explain it to you....

I hate to tell you this, but you're also thinking as a residential user when it comes to technology.

Cable business class service is usually not burdened by the same problems as a residential service.

Time Warner Cable, for example, in some areas runs a semi different network for business. In some cases, they will run fiber connections to the business and offer 50mb service sync.

Also, in many true business areas, there is a node that will serve mostly business and has less saturation as does a typical residential node does.

If I recall correctly, Cable Vision actually runs some business class on an entirely different channel from residential.

Most cable business class service also comes with an SLA as well and the service, in most cases, are stable.

So, in the same time you are saying that people here are thinking residential (which they mostly are) you are doing the same thing when it comes to reliability. So don't make the same mistakes that others are doing in generalizing.

I agree with you in much part that business doesn't necessarily go by the most bandwidth for the cheapest price.. if they do, to be honest, it shows just how good of an I.T. guy a business really has.. I know if I had the need for an I.T. guy in my business and he/she went solely on price, I'd question their abilities.

Dude it sounds like your saying that internet feeding off of a saturated node is more reliable than a T-1?? Thats so funny im about to fall out of my chair..

so if you need service do they send techs out that know what they're doing or do they send geek squad out?

You made the right decision, In most cases with cable your paying a higher price to share an internet connection off the same node with residential customers. I know quite a few business's that went with cable internet and a couple of months later they went right back to T-1 because of outages. You made the right decision.

Personally, I've found the whole "business class SLA" thing to be a crock of sh*t and a shoddy excuse to make folks feel better about overpaying for a service.

At one of our offices, we have a 384kbps/384kbps "business" fixed wireless service from Covad (formerly Nextweb, formerly Skypipline). They charge us $129 per month for this gem. They advertise it like they do T1 service, SLA and whatnot.

The actual reliability of this service is absolute CRAP. It goes down more than any $14.95 SBC or Verizon DSL line I've ever dealt with. Sure there's an SLA. Sure I can get credit. What good does it do? It's not even worth my time to try and collect all of the ups and downs in hopes of collecting a few days worth of a refund.

I have adsl 6.0/758k at $80 a month static IP.
I have comcast 8/800 at $60 a month
I have u-vesre 6m/1m up at $40 a month.

Guess how many seconds a year I am going to be with out internet.

When my area gets community wireless I will add that also. I have my current connections linked together using 2 loadbalancing rouers.

Even if you have a t1 I would think you should get a cheap backup to loadbalnce with it. It is hard for me to even know I am down unless i activily check all 3 connections and I try and use them with usenet.
