[POLL] Image Viewers - 2008 Members ChoiceWikipedia's definition of an Image Viewer is a computer program that displays a stored graphical image; it can often handle various graphics file formats. Such software usually renders the image according to properties of the display such as color depth and display resolution. One may use a full-featured bitmap graphics editors (such as Photoshop or the GIMP) as an image viewer. But these have editing functionality one may not need. A simple viewer lacks much of this functionality and therefore starts faster. Also, viewers do have simple functionalities that editors usually lack, such as stepping through all the images in a folder (possibly as a slideshow). If I've forgotten a viewer that you're using please list it along with a link if possible. Thanks steve1a for last years poll. |

I voted for ACDSee but I am using 2.43. I would not use a newer version. |

System default is Irfanview because of the plug-ins and extra functions. FastStone is the stand alone when I go rooting through folders looking for specific things. (Have folder default set to details, removed thumbnail default view for picture folders, so a stand-alone viewer is very handy for me, and FastStone is a very nice one). |

For me, Irfanview is a must have "plug-in" for the Windows OS. As a simple viewer, which this poll seems to suggest, I don't think it can be beat. It's capable of much more like many of the other programs, but that's just a bonus. At least read about the keyboard shortcuts! |

Thanks for starting off the new round of polls, fourboxers.
In XP I use XnView, in Linux I use either Eye Of Gnome, or F-Spot. or Gwenview, or DigiKam to view, depending on the distro. I use Gimp to edit.

Another vote for Irfanview. Great image viewer, highly recommended. Started many years ago with Vueprint and still have it, but Irfanview is the better choice. |

I put a check in the "other" box. I have been using PMView Pro for many years and have found nothing that fits my needs better. I also use Picasa2. |

I ditched ACDSee (tired of the bloat) for FastStone, but I really do miss the speed of ACDSee |

I'll take a risk going against the grain but I've never liked IrfanView all that much. I keep trying it because of its popularity but it is kind of clunky and slow compared to FastStone and Cam2PC. I also have a preference for full screen viewers.
I think FastStone copied some of the full screen ideas from Cam2PC but is kept up to date more so and is my primary viewer since it can detect the resolution change when I rotate my monitor. I still haven't seen a full screen viewer that renders as fast as Cam2PC. |

I'm finding myself totally migrating towards FastStone Image Viewer ... With their increased format support, frequent upgrades, intuitive attractive GUI, cool slide transitions ... More and more useful features like the addition in the 3.3 beta of: portable: A zip (compressed) file that includes all the required files to run the application independently from any folder you dump it in. Major advantage is that you can carry it around on a memory stick / USB flash drive, or copy / migrate from PC to PC via simple copying of files. No installation is necessary.and it's still a FREEBIE ! I also prefer the PicaView portion of ACDSee for the right click content menu preview ... but haven't updated it in years ... |
