Re: Great Interview KarlI tend to take most of the 'speed tests' as a 'best case' scenario (i.e. my connection to a server that is 'local' or peered closely). Many sites are NOT local, and will typically not always allow your full bandwidth.
eg. connecting to ftp.mirrors.kernel.org to download a Fedora core iso (San Jose) maxes my corp line at ~ 10Mbps (maxed at just over 1.0MB/second). Connecting to another site (i.e. Redhat), I was able to download at ~2.5MB/second.
So paying extra to a line that I don't any good application that requires it (or servers that can dish it out regularly) makes it a general 'waste' IMO.
Comcast Rick, let me know if Comcast can match this with PowerBoost.

-- Canada = Hollywood North | | RickPremium,MVM join:2001-02-06 Waterbury, CT | I dl'd about 250MB of the file from the redhat site and averaged just a shade under 10,000k in doing so. And, for me, that's probably a 3000 mile journey to that server from here in Ct.
Not too shabby for a residential HSI connection by any means.
For the majority of files I download..updates..and programs..I usually see close to double those speeds. That's the real world for me. And it's an enormous time saver..and well worth the literally pennies a day difference between a dsl connection that runs 1/13th those speeds.
Again..realize what it is we're talking about here is maybe 60 some odd cents a day. That gets you nothing these days..but does get you 13 times the speed of a T1 speed DSL connection.
I really don't want to get into an argument over pennies..but that's what we are talking about here. And, if that's too much for someone to pay..then so be it. But it's certainly not fair to characterize dsl in the manner in which you are at times...as being some walmart of the industry. DSL IS EXPENSIVE for what you're getting.
You pay a little bit less..but what you pay for is EXPENSIVE.
I can't say it any clearer than that. -- The Coyote captured the RR! Roadrunner Rick is now Comcastic! | | RickPremium,MVM join:2001-02-06 Waterbury, CT | reply to en102 Oh, and BTW..How much per month does that 37MB CORPORATE line cost in relationship to a 42.95 per month Comcast residential connection?
HUGE money I would imagine.
But yet..I can still manage to average 10Mb on 3,000 mile away transfers? I can still get 20Mb speed tests and more? I can download OOL 64MB files at 20,000k speeds?
Comcast is an ENORMOUS value leader. And uverse..jeesh..I don't even know if they know how bad it is.
I suspect they will soon though. -- The Coyote captured the RR! Never said it was a shabby connection. However, most programs still only take seconds to download, and updates/autoupdates are all done in the background - so I don't care. Where I do care is when I need to do something with the file(s) i.e. ISO or if I'm attempting to stream video. Streaming video will depend more on the other end than mine. SSH, Remote Desktop, VPN all are essentially the same.

You pay a little bit less..but what you pay for is EXPENSIVE. I can't say it any clearer than that. Well, some people prioritize what they want. $219/year for a couple Mbps more (which doesn't affect me in my day to day life) is a waste of money IMO. ($0.60x365).
Walmart pricing (in case you haven't seen one in your area) keeps each individual price low. Stating DSL IS EXPENSIVE (for what you get) may be somewhat true... DSL itself (for speeds 6Mbps or less) ISN'T EXPENSIVE... but in general, more expensive/Mbps. Walmart pricing has ALWAYS been about cutting the basic cost... not about selling more for a higher price. My argument (and you did make it above) is than in general, the bottom line is DSL (in AT&T areas at least) are a bit cheaper. For those that 'need' the extra speed, go an pay for it. For those that don't really care what the speed is (as long as it works - I suspect you'll find millions stating 'fast' is fast enough, and I don't want to pay more...PERIOD)
If Comcast had 'powerboost' on a 1.5Mbps package (or even offered a 1.5Mbps package) for $24.95, I suspect they'd lure AT&T customers over. -- Canada = Hollywood North
| en102Canadian, eh? join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA | reply to Rick Doesn't cost me a cent... and its actually connected to an OC-12.
Value is relative.
300 channels of TV for $75/month may be better 'value' than 100 channels of TV for $60/month
But if those last 200 channels have nothing that I want to watch/see... then they have no value to me, and I don't see myself wasting money on it, even if it is 'better value' per channel.
This is similar to me paying an extra $10/month for higher speed Internet (and probably many others as well). Perceived value is different than actual. If that extra rate does not percieve to have any useful impact to the user, then why pay more ? -- Canada = Hollywood North
