After so many recommendations for Auslogics Disk Defrag, I decided to try it out.

Wow, it's amazing. Really fast. Much better than Windows defrag.

Windows Defrag is surprisingly inept -- a highly crippled version of Diskeeper Lite. Example: I removed my pagefile from drive C:, did a complete defrag with the Windows tool (which theoretically would consolidate files and free space), and then created a pagefile and checked to see if it was contiguous. Nope -- it was in 86 fragments all over the disk!

For serious defragging I've been using an offline bootable CD that's part of the Winternals package; when that was done, my pagefile was contiguous. However, this company has now been taken over by Microsoft and no longer exists:

I voted:

Diskeeper (on my XP computer) and Windows Defrag on my Vista computer. I've not had the time to research Diskeeper's Vista compatability yet, but if Diskeeper is Vista ready, then Diskeeper it will be on my Vista machine.

Thank you for the poll grobinette See Profile.

If and only if I must work with a Windows operating system for any length of time, my choice is Windows Defrag.

Otherwise, I am using Linux with the ext3 file system, which defrags itself on the fly.

Defrag is a relic of an older era when poor file systems (i.e. FAT) were used. As far as I know, NTFS should not need defragging. In any case, I mostly use unix, so the small amount of time I use windows is not enough to cause serious fragmentation problems.

After seeing so many recommendations for Auglogics today in this thread, I downloaded it and gave it a try. Very, very nice. My new defrag program. Bye bye Windows Defrag.
