Specifically how to set the Belkin in AP Mode to a (static?) IP that is within the range of IP addresses admin'd by the DLink DHCP server but does not conflict (or use up)one of the DHCP addresses admin'd by the router. I have read one should set the address of the Belkin outside the range of addy's so as to not create conflicts with the DHCP servers administration of new IP's to new computers joining the LAN. I'm a bit confused by this.
The Dlink admins addresses between 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.199.
The Belkin's "(default)AP IP address [for the F5D8230-4/AP is] 192.168.2.254 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.0."(Mozerd Belkin FAQ)
The base IP addresses are obviously different so I would need to change the Belkin's AP IP to an address within the 192.168."0".xxx range to match the DLink 4100...Correct?
So how do I set the Belkin's IP address to so as to avoid conflict with the DLinks DHCP server addresses of 100 to 199 and still stay within the "neighborhood" of the 4100's administration.. do I use one of the auto assigned IP's?
I think one can reserve an IP address (based on the MAC addy of the Belkin) within the range of the DLink IP's but I also thought there was a way to keep all the IP's available for the DHCP server and still have the DLINK recognize the Belkin...
If we could start with the simplest answer first that would be great...
Meanwhile I'm going back to Mozerd's FAQ on this topic..

Assign it an unused address within 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.99 or 192.168.0.200 - 192.168.0.254. Avoid the range being assigned by the DHCP server.
Unless you've assigned something else to this address, 192.168.0.2 would be an excellent choice.

I think I see whats going on. As long as the IP address stays within the 192.168."0".x but out of the 100-199 range its all good. Is that what the subnet 255.255.255.0 is doing"..establishing the neighborhood for 192.168.0.x?
Now if i need to access the Belkin for admin purposes that "new" 192.168."0".x address is what i would type into the browser?
Also would I need to "reserve" the MAC/IP address of the Belkin on the D-Link?
I take it i would patch the WAN port of the Belkin into a LAN port of the D-Link...interstingly enough its currently patched LAN to LAN and ripping along but occasinally steps on the connection. | |

No, since you gave it a range outside of the D-Link's DHCP address range, it's a safe address and does not need to be reserved.

In the Belkin's Bridged mode, you may use either the WAN or a LAN port of the Belkin -- it does not matter since all of the ports are bridged together and behave identically.

1 edit | Belkin bombs When I enable the Belkin to go in AP mode and use the 192.168.0.2 address as the new IP for my DLink LAN the Belkin just Bombs. It does not respond to anything even when its disconnected from the DLINK and I'm hooked up to it directly via a laptop.
I end up having to do a hard reset on the Belking to get the Belkins default IP addy back. It seems so simple yet its getting quite cranky. | |
