»Registry Booster 2

Within the text of this thread, you might find a lot of things you were asking about re: reg. cleaners and what's good and what isn't. I needed some info for someone and I think that my thread would be beneficial to you as well.

What bothers me about all this is that even "mature" applications still write "garbage" to the registry.
The human genome looks like garbage too. Take away just 4% of that garbage and you become a chimpanzee.

Isn't it better to run that program that looks for bad install items (malware etc) (hijack log)??? and then tackle those problems?

In other words, cleaning a registry for neatness sake seems to be more dangerous than its worth, compared to lets say compacting the hard drive and plain ole deleting old files and removing old and unused software.

Before you talk about 'fixing' something, you ought to explain what is 'broken' about it.

There seems to be some panic about "OMFG! There's an entry in the registry that nobody uses. Aieee!".
Very true @"what is 'broken' about it".

What bothers me about all this is that even "mature" applications still write "garbage" to the registry.

Sigh.

Exactly. It is those batch registry/file "cleaners" which are very likey to put a PC in a state of needing to be fixed.

As for CCleaner I have reinstalled Windows twice for a friend who used it twice. I told him if he uses it again he's on his own.

With XP and later, I've never read any credible info that proves to me any of the automated registry cleaners/improvers (my word) are worthwhile. If one has registry issues that are truly causing problems, the OS either needs to be repaired or reinstalled (IMO).

But if one believes that they must have a auto cleaner/improver, my vote is for one that takes a very conservative approach. The less deep the cleaning/improving, the lower the chances of problems afterward.

A couple of free examples... RegSeeker is very aggresive. It typically finds hundreds of "issues." At the opposite end of the spectrum is Tweaknow RegCleaner Standard (which is much more conservative.) When I looked at it Tweaknow only found 20 or 30 things.

One other thing to be very aware of. If you must choose a cleaner/improver, only use one that has a full backup of what it removes. That way, one could hopefully restore back to where they were before the "help" was applied...

@broadbandscope.com

  To whom it may concern,

There seem to be many programs out here that promise to be able to fix the registry of my comp. There are the obviously bad ones such as the dreaded winfixer, but I was wondering if any of these programs are actually real and worthwhile, and more importantly, are there any free ones which are any good?

Thanks very much for your advice.
