How is Apple going to improve battery life for 3G ?

Jobs:
There is no 3G iPhone as yet because, as Jobs said at the launch, the "The trade off with 3G [in battery life] is too bad right now."
And between now and 1Q 2008, what is going to change regarding battery capacity? No new battery tech is available. Will the 3G radio chips change enough between now and then to reduce power draw? Or will Apple make a bigger, thicker iPhone to handle a bigger battery for 3G use?

I have a Samsung blackjack with the "extended" battery.

I know some people turn off 3G to enhance their battery life, but on my phone, 3G seems to make very little difference. With light usage it lasts around 3 days between charges, in Edge or 3G mode (and yes 3G is enabled here).

How about a removable battery?

There is supposed to be a new chip, which is much better then it is now. The chip will use less energy so its better battery life. 3g should have included some of gsm's battery saving aspects.

This comment in general makes me wonder about the performance of other 3G phones as they start to roll out. 2G phones have finally gotten decent battery life and now we are going to go back to the AMPS days under 3G?

3G is available in Valencia? When did this happen? Serious question, not trying to be an ass.

I saw it for the first time on 6/22/07.

And I didn't take it in the "being an ass" context. If you're from Sunland as your profile states, you're not exactly in a high tech metropolis either, lol. I think 3G went active here the same time it did there. That weekend I drove to my Mom's in Tujunga and I had 3G for the first time there as well.

We got a Starbucks here so we are moving on up! How are the speeds? Did you do any speed test?

Keep in mind, the iPhone was in development for at least a year before launch.

Lol! What S/T needs is a Target, Walmart or something to replace K-mart. (NO to home depot, rah rah)

Speeds are usually in the 760-800kbps-ish range when I connect my Blackjack to my laptop. It works very well where there's good signal. When you start to get into the hills of Tujunga, Cingular's coverage becomes pretty craptacular.
