[speed/latency] max download speed at 15KB/s

since a few days ago, I've been getting very slow download speeds (max of 15KB/s) and even webpages load noticeably much slower than they used to.

my upload speeds are fine though, averaging at 90KB/s.

i was upgraded in the spring of this year from 1.5Mb to a 3Mb connection and have been getting good download speeds until recently.

can someone help me find out what's the cause? tia

Post your modem stats, the results from a Speakeasy.net speed test to the sever both nearest and farthest from you, a link to the results of a Tweak Test, and a link to the results of a Line Quality Test.

speakeasy speed test results (nearest server):
Download Speed: 132 kbps (16.5KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 729 kbps (91.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

speakeasy speed test results (farthest server):
Download Speed: 32 kbps (4KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 718 kbps (89.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

can you post links to where I can perform tweak and line quality tests?

Does it happen at all times of the day, or maybe only in the late afternoon and evening?

It's a line problem. If you can, try testing from the NID and see if it improves.

can you tell me how you determined it's a line problem?

also, what's the NID?

It's just a guess. But it's (most likely) not a network problem because you are not syncing at the correct rates and your modem stats are far from good. So that leaves a problem with the physical line.

The NID is a grey box around where the phone line enters your house. If you live in an apartment, you most likely don't have access. Inside, there is usually a test jack. Plugging in here disconnects all inside wiring, and helps rule out any wiring issues that you are responsible for.

I am in the same situation except it's reversed for me. My download is fine but upload is horrible (20kbps max) A verizon tech is coming over to my place on Friday to check it out.

it's always been tough for me to get verizon tech support to dispatch a technician to my home.

do you know a good number to call or what to do in order to convince them to send out a technician?

»/forum/vzdirect The key will be that you are not syncing at your correct speed.

I realize that the connection is not secure when submitting the information on the vz direct forum, so I decided not to post there.

what number should I call to get a technician to come to me the fastest?

Secure as encrypted, no. But no one but you and the Verizon people have access to the thread. The most I think they've ever asked for is your name and phone number and the same things we ask here. As far as calling, sorry, have fun talking to "Randy" or "Bob" in India at 1-800-567-6789. If you are lucky, maybe you'll get Canada. At least most of them speak passable English.
