| WRT350N - Im just stunned.
This post is in case someone is thinking of buying one of these routers.
Im an experienced geek.. do computer repairs on the evening/weekends thing.. So when my neighbor asks if I can setup his new router securely for him, I say "heck, no prob at all"
First router - no internet right out of the box. It gets an IP from Shaw, it supplies IP's to the computers in the house, but will NOT route any traffic in or out to the internet. Turned off all security functions, went through the menus for 45 mins .. no love.
I figured (for a $200 router) it mustve been a weird aberration, told him to take it back and get another.
While he's doing that, I start digging around the web, start finding a few reports of similar problems..
Second router - now -this- is what was supposed to happen.. Or so I think when it takes a whole 5-10 minutes to get everything setup correctly and all his computers using the internet. Until, 4 days later, a circuit breaker for that room tripped and his router got power cycled. No internet. Same fault as the first modem, would get a Shaw IP, would NOT route any traffic.
Told him to take it back, get another router.
Third router - Same as first router, faulty right out of the box.
I have now told him if I see another one of those routers next time I come in the house, Im walkin right back out.
Even on the official Linksys support community forums, there are no Linksys techs popping in to offer advice, just moderators editing out posts.
Do Not Buy a WRT350N.
thanks,

| Version 2? You're not referring to the version they just pulled because it was bricking units? I would not recommend using that version even if you found it out there. There is a beta version kicking around 1.05.8 I think, but a beta version of a router firmware... I am waiting on that one...lol

I don't believe those firmware versions are compatible, or at least I've not found anybody documenting it working... |

@comcast.net | reply to nopk You should try a third-party firmware. Two that were just released support the WRT350N and are much better than stock. |

| reply to nopk Had same issues with wrt300n. (someone else bought it for me) Put it away for about a year tell i noticed ddwrt was supporting it (free third party).
Now the v24 firmware is nearing completion and the router is stable as a rock with way more features. |

| reply to nopk Yeah, I run DD-WRT on my WRT54GL and have no complaints.. but I have no intention of mucking with a non-standard setup for my neighbor.. for a product they're charging that much for, it should work. period. I don't expect perfection.. small bugs etc.. here and there, no problems. I shouldn't, however, be expected to flash a new firmware in order to have basic functionality. Especially when there has been no statement from Linksys that they've had issues.
Went over after work today, different router this time, set it up in 5 mins. Came home. Had a beer. Hope I don't have to talk to the neighbor about internet for awhile

I was wondering if Brett's neighbor switched to a different manufacturer.
I'm new to this forum .. just beginning searching/reading with a thought towards purchasing a first router. Security isn't a prime motivation as I've implemented additional methods, beyond being behind Hughes' NOC NAT, for protection. Shortly, I will finalize a HDTV purchase decision. I intend mating a desktop machine to the TV and, from another desktop machine, I want to share my satellite connection between the two.
I assume a wired connection to the main box and wireless to the tv mated machine is the way to go?
Generally, is the WRT54GS well thought of here? If so, am I correct that it's capable of accomplishing what I'd like done?
Brett: if you'd rather I post a new topic rather than muck up your thread, please say so.

Does it have a few issues, sure. But they are not something that I've found to be enough to switch to another brand or take the unit back... |

| reply to nopk @bubba1 - I dont recall the exact model, though it was another Linksys N product (150N maybe?). We'll see how it holds up.
Im using a Linksys WRT54GL on DD-WRT firmware here at home and have been very happy with it.
@FicsmanS - as I said above, I use Linksys stuff myself.. Ive always been generally happy with it.. but Ive found more and more posts elsewhere about lockups and having to hard-reset the 350N to get it back etc.. I hope yours live a long life.. the ones I tried sure as heck didnt. |

@rr.com | reply to nopk Have even tried to reset the router by holding the reset button for 30 seconds !! That works everytime !! |

| reply to nopk nopk: did you tried running dd-wrt on it? It is supported by dd-wrt?
I'm thinking about moving to a giga router... been doing some heavy transfer with my wrt54gl, but it seems it just can keep up. Also, I don't want to loose the "dd-wrt" goodies with a new router... so, I wonder if *that is* the solution for the wrt350n problems. I understand that wrt350n v1's are supported by dd-wrt 2.4 |

decx Premium join:2002-06-07 Vancouver, BC | The WRT350N is supported by DD-WRT v24, however if you don't already have one you're going to have a rather hard time trying to find one as they have been replaced by the v2 quite a few months ago. -- Go Leafs Go! |

| I'm reluctant to jump into the DD-WRT ring on this one, seems to be a little distress on which version(s) work and don't work. Plus no USB support either without a bunch of messing around. I had the DD-WRT on my 54g and was very happy with it, seems to be a downgrade for the 350n though. Not worth it in my book, my 350n performs well enough not to justify the jump over.
I wish the DD-WRT guys could get the GUI working in a version that is stable, not sure that is a priority though... |
