Going back to Charter. What about my sbcglobal email?

I've been really happy with DSL, but I snagged a great deal from Charter for TV-Internet-Phone that I couldn't pass up. So I'm switching back to them for at least a year. The question I have is: What happens to my sbcglobal.net email account? It's been a good 2-3 years since I had Charter internet, but my email with them is still active and available to me. Will my sbcglobal.net account be the same and accessible through Yahoo? Of course, I've continued to get TV service from Charter, but I'm dropping ATT completely in this case. I just want to plan what I need to do before I cancel service. Thanks.

My understanding is that sbcglobal.net (the isp) provides e-mail to it's paying subscribers. If you leave the isp, you lose your e-mail. I believe it stays out there for something like 30 days before it is liable to go poof!

Alternatives are to change to a sbc dial-up versus dsl account to keep the e-mail or break the bonds with isp-provided e-mail so that you get e-mail separate from access.

60 days after you disconnect the DSL - the email will be suspended and you won't have access to it.

If you want to keep it active -then you can pay for the dialup service.

Thanks for the info. I kind of figured I would lose the address. I'm thinking of either paying for the plus level Yahoo or premium plus Bigfoot, and just skip the ISP based email permanently. Most likely I'll be back with ATT in a year after my Chrater promotion expires. U-verse might be available in my area by then too.

Check out Gmail. It's free and it includes POP access. I don't care for the web interface too much but for the price and portability, I'll tolerate it.

Are most of your addresses domains sbcglobal.net or yahoo.com. If yahoo, then yahoooooo (silly) cuz most likely you can keep your yahoo e-mail addresses because they offer free email anyway...worth asking.
If they are all sbcglobal.net, you can try using the tool that Charter gives you to notify everyone in your contact list of your new email address, just like at&t/sbcglobal.net/yahoo do. I believe AT&T, et all, uses software called "TrueSwitch", you can do a search on it or go to att/yahoo mail and options.
Not sure if that helps at all, but those are options of which I am aware.

Good luck and see you back in AT&T Midwest forum next year!

When you dump an ISP, the associated email address will be gone soon, too.
I would like be able to go to a different "pipe" unencumbered if things change, so to me, not using an isp's mail system makes sense. I am grandfathered to free hotmail pop access, but free gmail is there, as mentioned. Also, there are numerous choices for ~20 or so a year.

Actually, you are incorrect. After 60 days, you will be told to activate your Yahoo account, in order to continue to receive emails from that address.

I'm confused by the last reply. Will I be able to carry over my sbcglobal.net address by paying for Yahoo Plus service?

Also, I have a follow-up assuming I'll lose the address. My wife uses a disposable address, which ends yahoo.com and directs to her base sbcglobal.net one. Is there a way we can transfer that one over to a regular yahoo.com (preferably free versus plus) so she doesn't have to change her email with everyone. She gets a bit more email than I do, so she is less thrilled with the prospect of changing things.

No. That only applies to "unmerging" a merged 'yahoo.com' email address from an 'sbcglobal.net' email account.

I have "unmerged" a couple of 'yahoo.com' email addresses successfully; but I do have one failure.

I am unclear on that one. The disposable email addresses are a Yahoo! Mail Plus feature, and probably stuck to the 'sbcglobal.net' email account. Lose the 'sbcglobal.net' account, you will likely lose the disposable email addresses. However, if you have a merged 'yahoo.com' email address associated with that 'sbcglobal.net' account, I don't know if there is a way to keep the AddressGuard email addresses with the paid Yahoo! Mail Plus account after "unmerging" the 'yahoo.com' email address.

No merged yahoo address. I was just hoping I could spin out the disposable email address my wife uses to a stand alone one. I might try contacting Yahoo directly, and see if I can request it or spin it out before I cancel DSL.

My sbcglobal.net went to a Yahoo.com email addy after we canceled our DSL service. My wife's though was unmerged from her Yahoo.com. When I go to Flickr.com, it still shows the sbcglobal.net, which in theory any email going to the old would either be not accepted, or redirected to the yahoo.com

I don't understand the mechanism that would permit that. Unless you were given a specific option to create a free Yahoo! Identity using the old 'sbcglobal.net' user name when closing the account; but that could only happen if that user name were not already taken by another party.

I doubt that the old 'sbcglobal.net' account would be forwarded. When the 'sbcglobal.net' account is closed, that email address should be removed from the LDAP servers, and anybody trying to send to that account should get a connection refused error from the 'sbcglobal.net' domain gateway mail server.

My daughter has an @ameritech.net addy...when she moved to an area not served by SBC/AT&T she had her billing switched to dial up and added to my bill each month. They wouldn't bill her to her new address because it wasn't a covered area...she's kept the same email addys for three years now. cost is $9.99...she pays for my cell phone on her family plan so we're even.

I've changed ISP's a lot but my email has always been independent of the provider.

I canceled my Charter service years ago and the email address (and website space) was still valid. However, I figured it could be deleted at anytime, but they just seem to be lazy. If you have this great deal, have you run it past ATT? Maybe they'd match/beat it.

The one thing to keep in mind is if your cable acts up, you'll loose phone and internet. When the storms blew through our area last summer, Charter took almost two weeks to get cable service back up and running for everyone. People who had their internet and phone were SOL. Since we had DSL and POTS with ATT, we never lost service. Even when the power was out the phone still worked.

Only if you use a web based provider like hotmail, yahoo or gmail.

Will also do that if you are referring to your ISP as a web site hoster (which usually provide lots of pop and web email options with hosting accounts)

I have two email accounts which are independent of 'at&t Yahoo! HSI', yet it are not with web mail providers. I do have to have an SMTP message submission server that is not part of the IMAP service provider's package; but I have my choice of non-AT&T SMTP message submission servers:
•smtp.aim.com
•smtp.aol.com
•smtp.gmail.com
•smtp.gmx.net
•smtp.myrealbox.com
•smtp.mail.yahoo.com.au
•smtp.mail.yahoo.co.jp

(Not 'smtp.mail.yahoo.com', though; I can use it as a perk for having 'at&t Yahoo! HSI', but I'd lose it if I leave AT&T.)

I do not have any service from a web hosting provider.

UNCLE!!! I GIVE.

You are far beyond where I can go, maybe the others can assist.

Basically, I can assist in setting up mail clients that use SMTP, but thats it.

Good luck!
