1 edit | In New Haven it's a tie for first between; Pepe's (»www.pepespizzeria.com/) a personal favorite, Sally's and Modern APizza. Every other place is distant second around here.
By the way has anyone else had really bad service in Sally's? The only two times I've been there the service has been terrible. The first time I was there about ten years ago the waitress was extremely rude and they burnt the daylights out of the pie. Spent the next ten years avoiding the place and going to Pepe's. Figured I'd give it another go about six months ago, and again the service was terrible, but this time pie was good (and not burnt).
Oh and be careful when down in the Wooster Street area, there's been a rash of car break in's down there. See this article from WTNH: »www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp?s=7102056
If you hit Pepe's or Sally's, be sure to check out Libbys Italian Pastry Shop next door to Pepe's afterwards for pastries. They have pretty good canolies there. Also there are several other non-pizza restaurants like Consiglio's and Tony & Lucille's on Wooster ST that are excellent.

Sally's has been banned for life in my family since about 20 years ago. It's one thing to have to wait on line forever--you see the line, you have to wait, no problem. But the last time we were there, we had no wait for a table. However, it took almost two hours to get served and all kinds of people (connected people like judges, cops, and who knows who else) got served immediately.
We initally dumped Sally's for Pepe's,which has a more consumer friendly operation, even though my wife, a New Haven native, prefers the Sally pie.
Later we moved fairly close to Modern, which has an even more consumer friendly setup. We do mostly takeout. The Modern pie is actually closer to the Sally's.
I'm from Brooklyn, and I've gudgingly admitted that the top three New Haven pies are the equal of New York's best, e.g., Jonn's or Lombardi's.

However, it took almost two hours to get served and all kinds of people (connected people like judges, cops, and who knows who else) got served immediately. Both times I went to Sallys the same thing happened. the first time I asked the waitress what happened to our pie since many other people were coming in (after waiting in line) being served and leaving. The waitress said; "I don't know why don't you go talk to the guy over there" and she went back to talking to the people in the next booth. She wasn't even taking their order. So I ask the guy who she pointed to and he said "well haven't you talked to your waitress?" It went down hill from there. It turned out they burnt the pie and no one bothered to tell us. They said they'd make another one and actually had the nerve to charge us full price for it. When we left we didn't leave a tip and the waitress actually yelled at us, from across the packed restaurant, for not leaving a tip. Oh I lost it! I "calmly" explained, across the packed restaurant, to the waitress that we have been in the place for over two and a half hours, had our pie burnt, were treated like trash by the staff, and they expected us to leave a tip?
My second and last experience there wasn't much better. But others seem to rave about the place. Go figure

| Re: Ok guys, where do you get your pizza in CT? Be ready to stand in line for 3 hours! They use a coal fired oven which makes them unique. The peels they use are like, Heaven's, something like 10 feet long it seems due to how deep the oven is.
The service was pleasant but the place really bustles so you have to wait quite a while for your pie, but while you wait you can look at photos of VIPs who have eaten there like recent US presidents.
The pie is partially crispy crunchy and ever so slightly burnt the nice way. The Pies come out very organically shaped and made. The atmosphere is energetic to say the least. Just a couple slices and you're quite happy but the problem is it is so good you want more!
I don't suppose, Rick, there is such a perfect place because the good places you just have to wait your turn. There IS a great place in Ithaca NY where they sell some really cool varieties of slices, and even with all the variety of types, they are exceptional. A Salvadoran fellow took over the place but he views making the pies like they always were as totally sacred so you'd swear a guy named Mario made it. You don't have to be Italian to cook Italian, you just have to respect the way.
But when we talk about Pizza and Italians, true pizza is the "Pizza Margarita" (I know my spelling is wrong here) which is quite simple. Folks in Italy feel that Americans have gone overboard with ingredients and what they prefer over there is crust, sauce, fresh/buffalo mozerrela, and some basil leaves. Only that, that's all. That is true Italian the old world way. Or at least that's what I have seen and read and been told (I have never been to Italy, but I LONG to go!!!) I wish I were a merchant of Venice to be honest...
For me, I like the toppings: Sausage, maybe pepperoni/maybe not, peppers of various types, mushrooms, and onion. I also love broccoli pizza. -- You know your life has gotten "DICEY" when it turns into an episode of LOST, like my ex wife, who I swear is one of "The Others". And was I ever pissed off because I drove to Danbury only to find that out. Well, the trip was for a couple other things as well, but surely that was on the must stop at them agenda as well.
And honestly, I don't even know what their name was either. Maybe brick oven pizza or something like that? Or, maybe that was what they cooked their pizza in. Anyways..it was on newtown road in the same little plaza that Boston market is in..across from Burger King...if anyone can help me out on the name. Or..WHY they closed..or where the heck the pizza guy went.
He was a real pro and written up many times I guess in the media.
Strange how the business just didn't make it, being so good.
Anyways..signmeuptoo..i swear..with all your recent posts about Ct..and how you want to come back..you REALLY should be on the next bus out. There's no place..like home. And it sounds like Ct. is that for you. -- The Coyote captured the RR! Roadrunner Rick is now Comcastic!

| The great thing about CT and pizza is that almost anywhere you go you'll find great pizza....there are many good places, especially in the New Haven area, besides the big three (Pepe's, Sally's and Modern). I tend to go to Modern quite a bit since I work near there and the parking is a little easier than Wooster St. (Pepes/Sally's). Still a line though.
If you go up to Hamden, there are several good places there too - Olde World on Whitney ave, for one.

| Re: Ok guys, where do you get your pizza in CT? Thanks for that article. I've read another, but that article is very good. For those considering traveling from afar to try, let me tell you, it IS worth it, IMHO. I haven't been to Sally's, only Frank Pepe's, and I was a little bewildered by the wait. Though having had waited in line for two and a half hours to eat at the House of Nanking in San Fransisco, I resigned to the idea that it would be worth it. I had no idea how true that was.
The pizza arrives (finally) in an on shape, not the perfect cookie cutter versions you see from Dominoes, and trust me, the difference is so far it isn't funny. Places like Dominoes make puffy, doughy crusts of goo. A Wooster street pie is a very thin, crispy thing that is infinitely more satisfying. Sure, I won't turn down a Domino's pizza, heck, I used to work for them! But the difference is like Kindergarten and MIT if you will. Domino's isn't bad, it's just that Pepe's is that good, err, grand, if you will.
I don't know if there are any non New Englanders reading this, but if so, certainly make the trip. There is plenty to see and do in CT, MA, and RI (Southern NE).

Pepe's just opened a 'sister' pizza joint in Manchester in the Buckland Mall area! I can't wait to get over there and try it out. There's nothing too spectacular for pizza over in this area lately. But Wilson is definitely one of the better ones.

If I prefer to stay closer to the Stratford/Bpt area, I'd say Papa's pizza in Milford is excellent as well. They are brick oven style and use the sweet plum tomatoes. It's excellent, if you're ever in that area look it up it'll be worth the side trip!

Excellent place all around, not just pizza.
For all the time I spend in Windsor (I work there, and my gf lives there), I still haven't gotten to Italian Corner. Family Pizza is good, but some of their pies I find a bit too salty (haven't had any white pies there yet). I get grinders there all the time though. For pizza in Windsor I prefer Jim's or Wilson
