When we left we didn't leave a tip and the waitress actually yelled at us, from across the packed restaurant, for not leaving a tip. For those considering traveling from afar to try, let me tell you, it IS worth it, IMHO. I haven't been to Sally's, only Frank Pepe's, and I was a little bewildered by the wait. Though having had waited in line for two and a half hours to eat at the House of Nanking in San Fransisco, I resigned to the idea that it would be worth it. I had no idea how true that was.

The pizza arrives (finally) in an on shape, not the perfect cookie cutter versions you see from Dominoes, and trust me, the difference is so far it isn't funny. Places like Dominoes make puffy, doughy crusts of goo. A Wooster street pie is a very thin, crispy thing that is infinitely more satisfying. Sure, I won't turn down a Domino's pizza, heck, I used to work for them! But the difference is like Kindergarten and MIT if you will. The Pies come out very organically shaped and made. The atmosphere is energetic to say the least. Just a couple slices and you're quite happy but the problem is it is so good you want more!

I don't suppose, Rick, there is such a perfect place because the good places you just have to wait your turn. There IS a great place in Ithaca NY where they sell some really cool varieties of slices, and even with all the variety of types, they are exceptional. A Salvadoran fellow took over the place but he views making the pies like they always were as totally sacred so you'd swear a guy named Mario made it. You don't have to be Italian to cook Italian, you just have to respect the way.

But when we talk about Pizza and Italians, true pizza is the "Pizza Margarita" (I know my spelling is wrong here) which is quite simple. Folks in Italy feel that Americans have gone overboard with ingredients and what they prefer over there is crust, sauce, fresh/buffalo mozerrela, and some basil leaves. Only that, that's all.
Rick : Oh jeesh, here we go again. Another one of those i'm gonna put on 5 lbs this week trying out these places kinda thread. :)

Hmm.funny thing is..as much as folks are raving about pepe's above..i've never even heard of it..much less been there.

I suspect that will soon change. ;)

Honestly, I really can't say i've found any places here in Waterbury that I'd rave about. Several are ok..a few good..
but nothing that really makes me say...WOW..#1..gotta go there.

Personally, I think that in their quest to please too wide an audience of consumers ..too many have drifted off into being exactly what a pizza place shouldn't be..places with just too many choices where they really specialize in nothing. Pizza..is a REALLY simple thing when you get down to it..and IMO..what works is keeping the establishment that way as well. New York style..over sized slices..a little too much grease dripping off the sides..you have to fold the slice up just right to kinda catch it all from dripping over the sides..crust just nicely done with that nice brownish black on the bottom.

Are we talking yet? :)

But wait..there is more. The open door feeling of the restaurant. You ARE there..on a mission..and it's for that slice or pie you've just been dreaming about having all the way there.

Which brings me down to slices. If you don't have any in a case on the counter..FRESHLY prepared..steaming..with a line up of customers just waiting on them..then you aren't the place I'm talking about.

After all..we all don't have time to wait on that pie to be done. There's work to be done..and it's called eating instead.

The sauce..the cheese..done just right.
Mmmm..now we are talking.

Toppings? If it's not pepperoni or sausage...or the both of them together. Why Bother? you're not the kind of pizza i'm thinking about. Or maybe even place either..because you've kind of lost sight of things along the way.
Trying to make TOO many people happy. And letting some forget what it's really all about.

Where exactly is THAT kind of place..around here?
A couple places try..one comes pretty close..but heck..I can't even tell you their name. They're just there..waiting for me to run into..to pick up a slice. Or two.
Or...maybe even three. What the heck hey? We only live once.

But, I'm still on a mission to find this place. It's somewhat elusive. And why ny city is always on the road trip calender from time to time. Because there..they seem to still understand what I'm talking about.

Pepe's..is that it? Can you tell me that's it?

If so..they can be expecting a visit..very soon.

Thanks. :)
--
The Coyote captured the RR! Every other place is distant second around here.

By the way has anyone else had really bad service in Sally's? The only two times I've been there the service has been terrible. The first time I was there about ten years ago the waitress was extremely rude and they burnt the daylights out of the pie. Spent the next ten years avoiding the place and going to Pepe's. Figured I'd give it another go about six months ago, and again the service was terrible, but this time pie was good (and not burnt).

Oh and be careful when down in the Wooster Street area, there's been a rash of car break in's down there. They have pretty good canolies there. Also there are several other non-pizza restaurants like Consiglio's and Tony & Lucille's on Wooster ST that are excellent.
