 [Need Info] Suggestion for Anti-Virus?

I am looking fora suggestion for anti-virus and a software firewall to run on an older PC. Mustn't be "bloatware" and needs to use as few resources as possible as the PC is already slow.

Any ideas?

Try looking through the 2007 polls

2007 Firewall Poll

2007 Antivirus Poll

In some cases AV & Firewall software will work well for some people, and not for others.

I can only suggest you try them out and, see what suits you and you, are useing comfortable using the software.

I use Avast but I wouldn't call it light.

Avast finds more viruses then AVG. Even 7.5.

AVG lost it's "punch", too.

Any of the free offerings would probably do, AntiVir, AVG or Avast. I am using Avast and ZA Free here on an older PC, just a 1 gig cpu, without any problems. AntiVir might be best for you if it's an older PC than that, however, beware, there is an annoying nag screen popup on updating that you'll need to get rid of, and the update servers for the free version are very slow and problematic when major updates occur.

Antivir is very light and great at detection but has update problems at times where you will need to do a manual one. That is very simple, though. The nag screen can be disabled on Win xp home/pro (perhaps others as well).

That's slow but fine. Why don't you test several and see which you prefer. They must all be working on this pc

I've used Avast! free edition on a PIII 366 with 128 megs of RAM on win2k with no problems.

I used a rules-based fireall (8signs...not free) but something like Kerio 2.1.5 would be fine too.

All behind a router, so the firewall never really had much work to do anyways.

Same box now has NOD32 and still 8signs, bumped RAM to 512Mb..really helps.

IMO, simple is good.

Oh, and I don't think a p3-500 with 256Mb RAM is slow.

With XP sure, it might be.

Running Win2k or XP with 256M means you will be using swap A LOT..and will be painful. If ya can up to 512 it'd really help.

Make sure themes and crap are off..cut down on as many services as possible too. Mine has only 19 processes at boot, including antivirus, firewall, winpatrol, screenshot prog, etc.

Might think of running linux on it...it'll be faster and won't need a/v. Typing now on a p3-800 with 384Mb Ram running Xubuntu. It's fast.

Light & free??? Shoot for AVG then.

GL.

Note: Antivir's nag screen can't be disabled when using the AV under a limited account.
